weekend update
Mar. 21st, 2004 10:43 pmWent on a very nice hike with Mom on Saturday. Started out at High Point Trailhead along I-90, did the flat loop around the lake, then puttered around a bit til we found the trail I'd initially been looking for - Tiger Mountain Trail. If followed to the end, it goes to a very nice outlook point. Unfortunately, I wasn't sure exactly how far that end was, and we ended up turning back so that we'd be sure of getting back before dark. The way down was even more slippery and muddy than the way up, but it was a perfect day for it, so we had fun.
Other than that, my weekend has mostly been reading, eating good food, and occasionally hopping online to see if anybody's around to chat. Talked to Derek on the phone for a bit today - we're hoping to get together next weekend since we missed each other on Wednesday. Oh, and I bought some light gray, blue, and green yarns today, so I've started what will either be a Slytherin or a Ravenclaw scarf... I haven't decided which to do first, yet.
So far over the break I've finished Women of the Pleasure Quarter, a book on the history of geisha and their society; and read Adam's Navel, a "natural and cultural history of the human form;" and Child of the Prophecy, last in a wonderful trilogy by Juliet Marillier, based, if loosely, on Irish folklore and legend.
I've also started Walking to Canterbury, an absolutely fabulous book about retracing the steps of the traditional pilgrimage from London to Canterbury, nicely tying modern-day narrative from the author's experience with his interesting and well-written expositions on Medieval society and history. It has also sparked (or REsparked, I should say) a passion in me to do something similar. If I get the chance to study in the UK, I will definitely take some time afterwards, find a traveling companion, and do a bit of walking. Kildare strikes me as a fitting goal for such a "pilgrimage" - I've wanted for a long time to go there and see what remains of the site where there was once a temple to Brighid.
