NorWesCon!
Apr. 19th, 2003 08:24 pmSo, I attended my first real Sci-Fi/Fantasy convention today (yes, I know--I'm an embarassment to geeks everywhere... No cons? What a fool!) And had a lovely time at it, I must say. Big thanks to Bethany and Badger for convincing me to go, for taking me, and for making it fun. I can't wait to get my film back. *Impish grin*.
Wisdom culled from this experience:
1) Finishing costume at 2am the night before is a necessity... failing this, you must be helping others to finish their costumes.
2) Dress well, and no one will suspect you're a newbie.
3) Just because people are taking a picture of your friends, dressed as Padme Amidala and Random Jedi doesn't mean they won't want you (dressed as Goth Girl #5) in the picture. No one knows why... but it's true.
4) Vinyl dresses bring out the middle-aged fanboy freaks like an abandoned steak brings out flies. :P On the other hand, it also gets amusing looks and appreciative comments, which are a huge ego boost, especially if you have a male friend trailing after you who is kind enough to report said remarks once out of earshot.
5) Standees are a perfect photo-op; don't be afraid to molest the pretty Legolas cut-out!
6) The surreal experience of watching a troop of Klingons walk past a phalanx of Stormtroopers, who are conversing with a group of Jedi, and standing near a hobbit playing hackey-sack.... it's not to be missed. It's one of those amazing pleasures in life, and it should be savored.
7) Pretty boots are nice, but they suck for the feet.
8) Being in the SCA means that you *will* see someone you know at a sci-fi con. It also means that they probably won't recognize you unless they know you well or are much more observant than is typical, because you're out of context (ie, out of GARB.) On the other hand, this also means you'll stand there going "gods, I *know* this person... but who *is* it?" and then realize that the person is the former QUEEN, who just stepped down a few months ago. Oops. *Grins*; thankfully, she had no clue who *I* was.
And, of course, I forgot my con bag, purse, and camera at Badger and Bethany's house when we stopped off to pick up the rest of my stuff. I'm amazed I still have all my bodyparts after 20 years, considering how often I forget stuff.
Busily thinking now about costume for Tacky Tourney... which probably will *not* be tacky, just so I can wear it to other stuff, too, and have the glory of being all "ooo I have a pretty Lord of the Rings costume." Hell, I'll wear it to the premiere of RotK, too! Wheee! Sometimes I love being a nerdy fangirl.

Okay, so because I don't have a LJ, I can't seem to be able to leave my name (which is Bethany, BTW... Hi Jen!), but I just wanted to leave a note that said that I think that is probably the funniest thing that I've read in a long while. I liked #2 the best... I kept cracking up when I was reading it to Brander. :)
