Hey, neat! My allergy to nickel can be traced to a single receptor! And it triggers reactions in Humans, but not in mice!

Apparently '"this is the first time that an inorganic agent has been found to activate this pathway" of the innate immune system.'

Researchers estimate that about 5–10% of the population in the industrialized world is allergic to nickel on contact, and that figure reaches 10–20% in young women, who are more likely to be exposed to the metal in jewellery — particularly earrings and other piercings — that contain the metal.

Neat stuff there, and some good progress toward a more complete understanding of how allergies work in general.

I had nickel allergies when I was younger, but around my early 20s, it suddenly vanished. I'm not quite sure how that happened, but I'm glad it did >_>

My allergies used to be a lot worse, but they're still definitely around. I tried to wear a very pretty but obviously cheap-metal pair of earrings I'd picked up from god knows where a while ago, and a few hours later my earlobes itched madly.

Oh god, and belts. I have one belt that, after I wore it for about a half a year, started giving me a rash whenever the buckle touched my skin.

ME TOO! Apparently a smaller proportion of THAT proportion has the metal allergy internally, as I found out with I got a metal plate put in my arm after shattering my humerus. Crazy stuff.

...Oh my god, it totally never occurred to me that the allergy could affect internal stuff like plates. o_O That must have been the most miserable thing ever!!!

Luckily, I am NOT part of that smaller percentage. At the time it was suggested I might be, I was wearing a paper gown and about to get my arm painted in iodine, so the surgeon figured it was best to try it out and see. No idea what would have happened... apparently, it causes sort of an all-body rash. Shudder shudder.
