Today is 10/10/10. A neat number. The Boy tells me this (101010, that is) is 42 in binary, and I'm forced to believe him since... well, I can't read binary. ;)

So far the extent of this date's vast supernatural and mystical meaning for me has been that it's apparently a very good day for walking circles around the office drinking tea and listening to random folk music, pulling random books off the shelf and then putting them back after remembering that they won't really help me decide what mythical people would do for Halloween. Hmm. Pity, that. I have books to tell me a lot of things, but that's not one of them.

Also, that apparently nothing I write is short anymore. When did that happen?

Binary's easy. Here's the complicated explanation: Each digit is either the presence or absence of a power of two, starting at two to the zero on the far right side and increasing by one power every digit you go left; add them all together, and you're good to go.

So with 101010, read right-to-left for ease of explanation, we have:
0 x 2^0 (i.e. 0 x 1 ... aka 0)
1 x 2^1 (i.e. 1 x 2 ... aka 2)
0 x 2^2 (i.e. 0 x 4 ... aka 0)
1 x 2^3 (i.e. 1 x 8 ... aka 8)
0 x 2^4 (i.e. 0 x 16... aka 0)
1 x 2^5 (i.e. 1 x 32... aka 32)

32+8+2 = 42

Win!

Oh, hey, is all that research you're not doing (but attempting to do!) for the story I requested?

I finished my original novel yesterday (well, first draft of, anyway), which makes all the numerical symbolism of the day kinda funny to me. Not that I expect my book to be the answer to life, the universe, and everything . . but it's amusing.

Caught that, did you? ;) Yeah, it was yours. I think I've got it figured out, I was just wool-gathering and trolling (ha) for ideas. I had this niggling thing in the back of my mind that I couldn't quite remember the source of, but I think I have it figured out.

Congratulations on the novel! ♥ I'd love to finish one of those bastards some day - every time I start an actual original novel I end up getting about a third of the way in and realizing I don't have enough plot to hold up an actual book, or I just get bored of the concept. Must work on that. :P

Well, this is my second one (novel, that is) - queried the first one around for a while, got a little interest but nobody who actually wanted to take it on, so started another project. The first one took me about a year, this one was closer to 18 months . . but the vast majority of the writing was done in the first six months and then the last two months, with a big block of nothing in the middle (my cousin died, and I was somewhat less of a functional human being for a while). So, I think I'm actually writing more quickly, when I'm writing, despite that it took longer chronologically.

. . . anyway, point being, just keep going, sooner or later you'll have an idea that just grabs you and is worth carrying through.
