Don't worry, the Vatican is ready to baptize aliens if they ask!

It's... good to know that all other, more pressing moral dilemmas have already been solved, I guess?

Is there some kind of contest at the Vatican right now for "most befuddling press release?" or what? I'm guessing this is one of those "any PR (that isn't talking about sex scandals) is good PR" kind of things...

Edited to Add: So... I've been thinking. The Vatican astronomer said:

Any entity – no matter how many tentacles it has – has a soul.

Any entity. Any... entity. So either there's a missing adjective there (like, say, 'sentient' or 'self-aware' or something like that), or this is a major change in theology, isn't it? I could have sworn the existing doctrine stated that animals don't have souls. I'm not going to complain, but isn't that going to be a tad bit problematic for them?

Also, I forgot to say that I snagged this link from [livejournal.com profile] deborah_judge, and that it's her fault that I'm now picturing the Pope attempting to baptize Londo. It was the "tentacles" remark.

Ooooooo. I need to reread that one! I read it in late high school, and I loved it, but I'm sure I missed a lot. ♥

You know it would not go well. ...For the pope, at least. I'm sure Londo would have a blast with it.

I kinda doubt either of them would be terribly happy!

I dunno - Londo seems to think that all religious ceremonies are about drinking and having fun, and he's just determined enough that I think that if he walked into it with that in mind he might well accomplish it despite what everyone else thought. ;)

I don't know. I can just see it:

"What is this? I have to stand here, yes, and then what? This white contraption does what, exactly? It holds water? That's all? On my world, we would have something so fancy only for the finest wine, or the best liquor. And we would use both in any religious--why are you--WATCH THE HAIR! Also, you did not tell me to bring a towel!" ::wipes holy water away, as priest cringes and reaches for more:: "I'm sorry, Father. I was not told that I was coming to be bathed, and if that is what I want, I will find six beautiful Centauri women to do it for me. Thank you, eh, very much for your time, but I believe I will be going now." ::walks off, pauses at the door:: "Did G'Kar put you up to this???"

And now I kind of want G'Kar to be there, too... ♥

(And I STILL don't have a Londo icon!!)

He's just a Jesuit brother; he's nowhere near high enough to be setting dogma. I imagine he'll be gently, publicly "corrected" by the Vatican in the coming days, if there's enough of a controversy around it.

I'd love to hear what Londo had to say about baptism. And Catholicism as a whole, for that matter. Might want to get a few drinks into him first, though.

Yeah, that's my feeling as well. Poor guy. His heart's clearly in the right place, and with his job I can't imagine he's often on the spot with reporters...

Might want to get a few drinks into him first, though.

I have a feeling the alcohol might be the whole point, for Londo... he'd probably be terribly confused about such a tiny amount of wine with communion. ;)

In fairness, most things are funnier if you picture Londo involved. I'm not sure if it's the accent or what, but it's the truth. ♥

Funny, I was just trying to picture the Pope baptizing Worf. :D Hehe! Isn't it amusing what we Scifi geeks get up to sometimes?

Particularly amusing since apparently the church official in question got into science through sci-fi (which I think is just adorable).

. . that's a guy with whom I think I could have some long and really interesting conversations. Derogatory comments about pagan gods aside, he seems aware of both the ridiculousness and the potential seriousness of the topic he's discussing, which is such a rare thing.

Londo as ambassador to Earth, trying to pick up some Human customs and understand Human religions... Beatrice II having a dry(pun intended) sense of humor about the whole thing... I am seriously tempted to write this for you, now. ;)

I don't have a Londo icon either! Seriously, why don't I?

I just want you to know this? made my day.

I'm picturing Londo trying to figure out communion and holy water and throwing his hands up and saying humans are really more like Minbari than he previously thought. And that humans need more alcohol in the rituals.

Of course in my imagination Londo is wearing his purple coat that makes him look stunning. :p
