Date: 2018-11-30 08:07 am (UTC)Explanation: I remember that back in the day of original broadcast, a great many of the vocal part of fandom thought Joe's reaction (first "She's crazy/lying" and then, once it had turned out Cassandra had told the truth, "different times, we have blood on our hands, too") was what Duncan's should have been, while Duncan's reaction was condemned as him being a bad friend. Two decades and a lot more awareness of rape culture later, I wonder whether this would still be the case were the Horseman episodes broadcast for the first time today? But what I'm really curious about is whether you see Joe's reaction gender related or simply as a "friend over stranger" thing? Or is it military culture (since see also: his Vietnam buddy)? Would it have made a difference if either Methos or Cassandra had a different gender, while who was a friend (to him) and who a stranger remained the same?
(I always found it interesting that there's an s3 episode with a one-off K'immie who actually did change from massacring bastard warlord to present good guy, and then it was Joe who called Duncan naive for believing Kirin had changed, declaring that impossible, but of course no on ein that scenario was a friend to either of them, and the question of believing/disbelieving a victim didn't come into it, either.)
