Here is an article about some real life people who could sure use some of the Mongolian specialist SCA heralds. Funny thought, isn't it? But when you think of it, the SCA is the sole world-wide organization with people who specialize in helping people make up a name for themselves.

And here, from NPR, is a linguist discussing swearing. (It's down toward the bottom of the page.) Geoff Nunberg is a genius, I swear - I love to listen to his thoughts, and makes his usual insightful points on this subject.

We're going to a lunecheon/tea/thing at the governor's mansion today... and that sounds as though I'm trying to write some sort of historical novel instead of my journal entry, doesn't it? Amazing, the weird situations that knowing people who Know People can get you into. Anyway, after that it's off to Powells, since we'll be down toward that direction already, so I won't be around a lot today.

I'd better go figure out what I'm wearing.

But the Mongols didn't really use surnames in period. It's a problem with SCA registration, too, 'cause WE require more than one name . . .

Ahhh, that's true... I guess I was just thinking of the SCA talent for explaining and coming up with surnames, in general. Bynames, at least, are always easy... "Hmm - what's a defining characteristic of this person? Tall? Red-haired? Bald?"

That is the root of the Norse naming convention. You were often given your name from you buddies. and as we all know, our drinking buddies are probably NOT the best people to be handing out names.
