Dad called today and said I got a letter saying that my jury date got changed to July 5, so now I can actually do it without it totally fucking my finals. So that's good!

Also, is it true that Hunter S. Thompson killed himself? I keep seeing it reported on my friends-list, but every time I try to follow a link to an article about it, the link gets an error message. And... would it be crass of me to ask why people seem to find this so shocking? It's definitely tragic, I agree, but I find it hard to be surprised - the stories I've heard of him don't exactly make him seem like the most stable of human beings. Or is it just the shock of the tragedy that's causing surprise?

I'm so glad I don't have classes tomorrow. So very fecking glad.

Edit: Oh, and many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] shadawyn for the yarn, crochet hooks, and booklet, and for coming out to dinner with us this evening - it was good seeing you again!

Yes he did it, no I'm not surprised. He was a pretty messed up guy, at least from what I understand of him. Amazing writer, though.

Yeah, I kind of figured that it'd have to be true. I just hate when I'm trying to confirm something and none of the links work.

*Shakes head* Great artists, I'm telling you - I don't want the talent, if what we see is the price of it. I'm pleased as punch being normal, comparatively.

I have a very soft spot in my heart for the Doctor. I wrote a reply here that was about 3 pages long so I posted it on my blog instead. If you guys care to read it, it's here:

That was a great little homage you wrote - I haven't read much of his writing, but there was a good bit of his style echoing in there, if I'm not mistaken.

The thing that shocked me about Hunter S. Thompson is that he died by his own hand and not thanks to a drug overdose...it's little short of a miracle that he made it to his late 60s.

Good point - if someone had asked, that definitely would've been what I'd have expected, too.

I'd never heard of him, but it is always sad when someone commits suicide.

It is. Thompson was a journalist and writer mostly in the 70s. Uhh... most famous thing would most likely be "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," the movie that came out at some point in the 90s, with Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro. (Ack, I think I misspelled that... ah well). I wasn't a huge fan of his writing, but I know a lot of people who really loved his work.

Ah. Well, thanks for the explination, I had really never heard of him at all. It always makes me kind of angry/sad when famous authors kill themselves. Because it only furthers the reputation that creative people are unstable. ::sighs::

It's a bad reputation, but I can't help but think that there's some basis to it. Some great artists definitely are more cracked than the average joe. On the other hand, there are a lot of cracked folks who are complete hacks or totally without talent, and a lot of great artists who manage to be completely sane and normal. It's just the publicity that the great crazies get, I guess, that does it.

"Some great artists definitely are more cracked than the average joe."

That's an understatement...

I suppose that is what does it. Still, it does depress one...
