So I go to check my email and stuff, and find that I have an "administrative hold" on my registration and stuff. The hold is lodged by the library. Well, that's never good.
It's an overdue fine, naturally... from two months ago. I turned in this damned book on the day it was due, but (*gasp*) I turned it in to the box in one of the other libraries on campus. Not even one of the little, distant ones, mind you - no, I turned it in to the biggest and most central of the libraries, figuring that they'd be able to figure out from the big "ODEGAARD" stamped on the book where it belonged. Silly me, obviously, assuming that the libraries communicate with each other.
So now, I have a $6.50 fine. Which is no big deal, but I'm thinking over the last quarter (because the book was due the first week of the quarter that ended two weeks ago), and I'd just like to note that there was no fucking sign of this charge until today. I've accessed my account. I've placed holds on books since then. I've checked out books at the desk. I've retrieved books ordered via inter-library loans. I've chatted pleasantly with at least two of the desk clerks (one of whom is the brother of one of my supervisors in my own office), because, admittedly, checking out a dozen books on J.R.R. Tolkien on the last day of a quarter does tend to attract a bit of attention. But did anything ever indicate "oh, by the way, you have a fine"? No.
I'm so tempted to gather up quarters and dimes and feed them the whole fine in change, just to be annoying.
