Whale Rider
Jun. 27th, 2003 12:18 pmA friend of one of my roommates had free passes to see The Whale Rider at the Neptune last night, so I went with them. I knew nothing about the movie except that the poster looked amazing and that it was filmed in New Zealand, but they said it won some big awards at SIFF this year.
Wow, was I not a bit let down by this movie.
First off, let me just gush stupidly: New Zealand is the most beautiful place in the world!!! The water! The hills! The amazing rocky places! WOW! And all the acting was damned impressive--I'm hard-pressed to say which performance I liked best. The story was beautiful. Pretty much everything about this movie is *stunning,* and I loved it massively.
Oh... and, of course, because I am me, I must comment that I had a very weird moment during one scene set in an ocean cove.... "Hey!" my mind screams, "That's the rock-wall of the Anduin!!!" It's a pretty prominent location in this movie, and even if you don't know what I mean now, you will if you see the movie. This is more than just me being a nerd with a good visual memory--it's a pretty striking landscape.
