*Pokes computer nervously*

Umm... so... does anybody know why my computer would be making a zillion copies of an empty folder in my music folder? I swear, I did nothing. I downloaded nothing. All I did was copy a CD of mine, and it split it up really weird... but then it seemed fine. And then it made another copy. And then, several hours later, there was another folder, and I checked it... and it had about a zillion folders all labelled the same thing and (presumably) empty. I say presumably because the earlier versions were mostly empty... but I was too weirded out to check these.

I got an error earlier when I was trying to copy one of my songs from a data CD, something about a recursive loop, but I cancelled that, and it's coming up in a totally different place than those files.... so I'm really confused.

I'm deleting them (all of them...), and shutting him down for the night.

Let me take a look tomorrow when you get home from work, and let's see if I can figure out what might've happened? Because I've never heard of this happening before, but it might've been in how you copied the CD. o_o

You bet - I thought I'd seen every possible fuck-up after everything my last incarnation of the computer went through, but this is a completely new one to me. I just copied the CD with Win Media player, like you're supposed to.... o_O

Oh, that's bad... I hope he feels better soon. Does he have a definite name yet?

I have a MIGHTY NEED for Methos icons.

His name may now be Joe, because I'm afraid that naming him Methos is asking for continual trouble of this sort. Much as I love Methos... yeah. I'm still not solidly decided yet, though.

*g* I'll see about tossing you some icons. I've got a lot of blanks and bases from making my game icons (www.greatestjournal.com/~deathonahorse), and a few more that I've been working on myself. Unfortunately, I can't make new ones until I reinstall some sort of photo-editing software... probably GIMP, since this time I'll actually be able to get the Help files.

Joe, then. Poor boy, his has some issues to work through... *wishes Joe well and sends cough drops and tissues*

I went to look at your Methos journal and found the icons delicious. I may need to steal them. I wish I had some good software in Pullman. My family gave me a trial version of Photoshop they had sitting around but it isn't as good as Photofantasy which they have here. It's sad. If I come up with something, I'll send it your way because even though the Netter icon is cool, he's ugly and I'm tired of it already!

And, in typical display of how fecking indecisive I am, I'm moving back toward Methos... because damned if the whole file thing didn't seem crazy enough to be a Methos moment. Besides, I just feel sort of amused calling my computer Methos. Because... *Sigh* Hey, if I can't have him in real life, I can at least name my computer after him. Or something.

Supposedly GIMP is fabulous, once you figure it out. And I should be in a much better way to figure it out, because this time I'll actually be able to have the Help files. For some stupid reason, they weren't ME compatible, so I didn't have them before... and that really sucked.

I should go to bed, or I'll oversleep again tomorrow. Blah.

Run a virus scan asap. Sounds like you might have encountered a copy protection scheme on the latter CD. They use tricks now to keep people from ripping CDs. One is to put a recursive loop on the edge of the cd so that the cd player endlessly comes back to the same spot. It makes most Macs freeze up and most PCs just try to spin the CD up endlessly.

Yeah, I thought of that copy-protection thing, but the CDs I was copying wouldn't really make sense for that - it was one CD that my grandpa copied for me a long time ago, one data CD written from my own computer, one a pair of CDs that had been previously copied to my old computer.

If anything was going to cause trouble, I'd pin bets on one of the two last CDs I mentioned (a very new one with a fair bit of 'online content' and stuff like that), but I'd think that if it was going to cause trouble, it would have done so on the old computer, too...

I hate that I'm stuck at school until 10:30 tonight - I really want to go home and run a virus scan NOW.

maybe it HAD done so on the old computer, and that's why Claire was having problems?

Nope - it was a noticeable thing, with random folder full of empty folders in the My Music folder.

Run a virus scan.

If that goes well, maybe try restoring your computer to a backup point about a week or two prior to the incident.

Yeah, as soon as I get home from work. At least I had the presence of mind to shut it all down last night, after deleting the folders.

Sadly, this is the computer that was completely reformatted last week. I've only just been getting my files all reinstalled and everything... blargh.

By the way, Grandpa says he sent you a link to AVG if you want to use it as a back-up or secondary. Did you get it?

Damn stupid fucking LJ - it ate this comment two times in a row!

I'll look to see if I got it, and probably just save the link. I'm pretty sure the one I got from the UW is a good one.
