After writer's group yesterday, I went over to [livejournal.com profile] zinjadu's place and watched the first episode of Firefly. I can now see what all the fuss (what was it, three years ago, now?) was all about.

This is a damn good series. And no, it's not just because I think Mal is cute. It's because, with the exception of one, all the characters managed to win at least my respect as actors and curiosity and affection for their characters, in the space of less than two hours. It's because they managed to do a sci-fi with music and ideas that aren't often mixed with that genre, and because the dialogue, sets and costumes are awesome. Emphasis on the dialogue. None of this craptastic shit they called dialogue on Enterprise, thank you very much. I get a kick out of any show that really manages to pull off never never showing their big scary dangerous aliens in the first ep (yay no crappy CGI or makeup!), has obvious tensions everywhere, a captain who's a bit of a bastard while still being very likeable, an equal male to female ratio (*gasp*), and yes, I like that they swear in Chinese. It just amuses me.

I'm tired. But I'm up at a sane hour (thanks to the cat), and hoping to get some work done before I go to the movie with Kari and Dora. And I'm going to go get breakfast, now, before I forget.

Oh, and I got such a pretty postcard from [livejournal.com profile] taradilien yesterday! Thank you so much, and I'm glad you had fun in Paris!

I've heard lots of good things about Firefly lately, but had never heard of it until just recently. Is it a cable show?
Enjoy your movie!

It was on Fox Network, but in July the sci-fi channel is going to be airing the reruns. Hopefully unlike Fox they will actually air them in their proper order. Firefly will go before the Stargate shows in the place Andromeda used to be.

Ah, Fox - eater of sci-fi television shows.

Hopefully, but sci-fi has a bad habit of playing things completely out of order. Hence why my understanding of Stargate SG-1 is completely messed up... well, that and I don't watch it consistently enough.

I really didn't care that much about Inara, just from the first episode - I hear she gets a lot more interesting and developed later on, so I'm waiting and hoping.

I'm SOOOO glad you liked it! Which character didn't you care for? I agree that the amazing dialogue is one of the main aspects that make this show so great. Yay for quotable fun.

*Giggles* I liked Wash, even though that first scene kind of sent me reeling from randomness. Honestly, the only one I didn't really care for was Inara... or whatever the heck the Companion's name was. She just didn't seem as developed as the others, or as interesting. I hear she gets better, though. I looooooove Mal and Kaylee, they're definitely my favorites so far. Zoe's neat, too, and River seems like she's really really well-acted, from what little I saw.

'Twas very fun - I can't wait to see more!

Yes, I think Inara does get better, but I agree that she's not as developed as she could be. Then again, that might be what one of the next two movies are for (yeah, the actors have signed on for two more films after this first one :D ). Mal is my favorite character, though so many come close. I just like his skewed sense of honor and he's just so damned snarky.

And if you like River now, just wait. *evil laughter*

Three movies? Wow. How the hell did they afford this, what with the show being cancelled the first time 'round? I mean, clearly the fan-base is there, and I'm glad they can do it, but it's still kind of funny.

Mal's such an easy character to like - he's just so painfully and charmingly human. I'm looking forward to possibly getting a bit more of his backstory and all, between the little 'prologue' scene and the beginning of the series proper.

Oh really? I got that sense from the trailer, yeah... iiiinteresting. *g*

I believe Joss pitched the idea for the movie(s) to Universal after the DVDs did so tremendously well. I think the execs were already big fans of the show too, so that didn't hurt. Apparently the next two films might not be a guarantee, but if the first one makes money (which after three pre-screenings sold out across the country in record time it seems kinda likely) then they'll get made.

Oh, and speaking of screenings, the June 23rd one in Seattle sold out in about 2 minutes. The fastest of them all. Then Fandango broke for an hour or so.

And yes, there's lots of fun backstory to come.

Ohh, that makes sense. I'm sure this one will do well enough, judging by the interest I'm seeing everywhere in it. Not to mention that the trailer was totally awesome.

Yeep. Glad I didn't know anything about it, at that point.

Yay!

I just encountered and got sucked into the whirlwind of Firefly too! my boyfriend has been into it since the beginning, and found Portland tickets for Serenity and drove us all the way down to see it last thursday. I've been hooked ever since I watched all the episodes a couple weeks ago too. How did I not hear about this earlier? It's very well written, i agree. Funny, and original. I like that it's only about humans, and that there aren't a bunch of whimsical aliens running about. It's just a human drama with some hilarious moments set in an outer space frontier. :)

When are you going to see the movie? It's spectacluar, you HAVE to go. I'll never be the same. :P

I can't believe it. Everyone else really HAS seen the movie!!! XP

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's getting sucked in right now! I heard about it way back just after it got cancelled, but when I heard someone describe it as 'cowboys in space' I thought "wow, that sounds dumb." Shows what I know. That really is the best way to describe it, but in totally not the way I was picturing!

Wah, no. I shall have to wait til September 30, along with the other three people in the whole world who haven't seen the movie yet. ;)

Yay for the Portland Screening! Did you and your boyfriend get to hang out at the party in front of the theatre?
