After writer's group yesterday, I went over to
zinjadu's place and watched the first episode of Firefly. I can now see what all the fuss (what was it, three years ago, now?) was all about.
This is a damn good series. And no, it's not just because I think Mal is cute. It's because, with the exception of one, all the characters managed to win at least my respect as actors and curiosity and affection for their characters, in the space of less than two hours. It's because they managed to do a sci-fi with music and ideas that aren't often mixed with that genre, and because the dialogue, sets and costumes are awesome. Emphasis on the dialogue. None of this craptastic shit they called dialogue on Enterprise, thank you very much. I get a kick out of any show that really manages to pull off never never showing their big scary dangerous aliens in the first ep (yay no crappy CGI or makeup!), has obvious tensions everywhere, a captain who's a bit of a bastard while still being very likeable, an equal male to female ratio (*gasp*), and yes, I like that they swear in Chinese. It just amuses me.
I'm tired. But I'm up at a sane hour (thanks to the cat), and hoping to get some work done before I go to the movie with Kari and Dora. And I'm going to go get breakfast, now, before I forget.
Oh, and I got such a pretty postcard from
taradilien yesterday! Thank you so much, and I'm glad you had fun in Paris!

Date: 2005-06-27 03:13 pm (UTC)Hopefully, but sci-fi has a bad habit of playing things completely out of order. Hence why my understanding of Stargate SG-1 is completely messed up... well, that and I don't watch it consistently enough.

Re: "Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal"
Date: 2005-06-27 03:11 pm (UTC)Mal's such an easy character to like - he's just so painfully and charmingly human. I'm looking forward to possibly getting a bit more of his backstory and all, between the little 'prologue' scene and the beginning of the series proper.
Oh really? I got that sense from the trailer, yeah... iiiinteresting. *g*
Re: "Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal"
Date: 2005-06-27 10:02 pm (UTC)Oh, and speaking of screenings, the June 23rd one in Seattle sold out in about 2 minutes. The fastest of them all. Then Fandango broke for an hour or so.
And yes, there's lots of fun backstory to come.

Yay!
DUDE!
Date: 2005-06-27 03:37 pm (UTC)When are you going to see the movie? It's spectacluar, you HAVE to go. I'll never be the same. :P
Re: DUDE!
Date: 2005-06-27 03:50 pm (UTC)I'm glad I'm not the only one who's getting sucked in right now! I heard about it way back just after it got cancelled, but when I heard someone describe it as 'cowboys in space' I thought "wow, that sounds dumb." Shows what I know. That really is the best way to describe it, but in totally not the way I was picturing!
Wah, no. I shall have to wait til September 30, along with the other three people in the whole world who haven't seen the movie yet. ;)
