Have our memories really gotten this bad?

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/8870809/

These girls are being praised for using their amazing talents at... repeating a few numbers. Is it just me, or can any idiot recite back a series of numbers, and keep them in mind if they keep on chanting them?

I wonder if they did the high kicks and pom-poms to help them remember?

I dunno, it takes me months to learn and remember my own phone-number....

Well, sure, but if you're chanting it? Anybody can sit there repeating something over and over... I dunno, I just don't think it's a 'talent' or a 'skill,' really, compared to the sorts of memorization people did in the past.

Remember though that with your drama experience, that you have sort of extraordinary memorizing skills that lots of others do not. Memorizing scripts and parts the way you did, I think you have developed a wonderful ability to memorize. Also I think that you actually do somewhat have a "natural talent" toward that.

Believe it or not though, the girls were actually on the Today show, and I hate to say it, but the ones that talked to Matt Lauer, were not very intelligent.
Seriously (and you know I hate to say things like that) it's true. :(

Yeah, the article mentioned that. I'd say I'm surprised... but I'd be lying.

Eh, I can't keep shit in my head even if I repeat it/chant it/put it into my head as a song. I am just shit with remembering numbers for some reason. And having been in car accidents before, it's not really a time when you're thinking clearly. It's more 'oholyshitwhatjusthappenedohmygodamIokaybreathebreathebreathe'.

hahahaha.

yeah im bad at remembering my phone #/pin #/address/ etc when it changes, but then I'm not sitting there chanting it over and over. I've done that lots of times to remember a number though-in fact havent we all? someone told us a phone number or name and we had nothing to write it down, so in our head we keep repeating it until we can write it down?

i agree they didnt do anything that amazing, but oh well. I think the funnier part is the guy who did it... "didnt think the damage was enough to stop" ... uh? arent you supposed to *always* stop ?! =P

Exactly. Yeah, that's just crazy.

An old issue of Bicycling magazine suggested using roadside pebbles and/or your own blood to write down the license plate of a car that hit you, so I'd say this is substantially better.

I guess we should be glad they didn't suggest scratching it into your skin with shards of glass?

I'm wondering why you do this to yourself. Looking at these articles can't be good for you.

Oh~ I finished the rough draft of my short story and I was hoping you'd be able to give it a quick edit by this weekend? *hopehope and puppy dog eyes*

Yeah, but they're entertaining. It's kind of like reading fandom wank... only for real life.

No problem, just send it off to me!

That makes it worse, somehow.

Yay! Thank you!!!!♥ Uh, just so you know, it's crap. =D

I know. But it's been a really slow day at work.

I doubt that.

Oh! I got the position at the Children's Museum, I have orientation on Monday!!

Fair enough. And Fandom Wank does get terribly repetitive if there's nothing really crazy wanking going on.

Okay, not crap, but not really good either.

Yay! I saw in your other post. Go you!

I don't read it much, myself, although I got regular reports from Terra right after HBP came out. *g*

We'll see.

*g* Sorry, I just had to fish for praise, there. *headdesk*

Uh, reinforcing stereotypes, much? I knew a couple of smart cheerleaders in high school (seeing as the only people I *knew* in high school were from my AP classes, they had to be a little intelligent); I doubt cheerleaders who can chant a six-digit number should be held up as the brightest of the bunch.

oh give them some credit, license plates can be as long as 7 digits! or in commercial vehicles, 8 I believe! They have awesome chanting powers.

Yeah. I'm sure there are bright cheerleaders, but on the whole... it's not exactly a hobby that inspires confidence in intelligence over cup-size and skill at high kicks.

Show me some cheerleaders who helped out by administering first aid or something, and then I'll be proud of them.

I had a high-school friend who was a cheerleader, and went on to double-major in math and physics.

Of course, he graduated from college and joined the Marines, so common sense may still be lacking.

Oh, sure, but that's like saying that geekiness isn't exactly a hobby that inspires confidence in social skills and hygiene. I mean, it's often *true*, but there are many exceptions! :P

Yeah, what confuses me is why they were on the Today Show. I'd think that such a big-time program could find more interesting people to interview.

Nobody had a pen anywhere? You'd think being highschool students, somebody would have something to write with. Though, I guess the coach did say to remember it and not to write it down.

Wow. To think somebody could actually keep, like, a whole licence number in mind for, like, really long. Oh man, cheerleaders are our heroes. We should, like, have a day named after them or something, and then, on that day, we could all, like, cheer them.

With their leading us, of course, 'cause we can't possibly cheer all by ourselves, can we?

I wonder if any of them remember the licence plate any more. Unless, of course, some of them are still chanting it...
