disaster commentary
Sep. 1st, 2005 01:31 pmThat's right, Bush - shove off the work of raising money for Katrina victims on Clinton and your daddy. Because we all know you're really busy relaxing and planning the war. After all, you said as much the other day, when you responded to a question about Cindy Sheehan, the mother who's protesting the war that killed her son, by saying:
'I think it's important for me to be thoughtful and sensitive to those who have got something to say. But I think it's also important for me to go on with my life.'
Fuck off, bastard.
Also, I know there are links all over the place to donate, but I just wanted to point out a few specifics. First, as much as I hate them, Q13's page is promising to match .50 on the dollar for every donation through their link, so that might be worth looking into if you're planning to donate.
Also, I know I have a lot of animal lovers here, so I'll point out Noah's Wish. They're a non-profit organization that is exclusively devoted to rescuing and sheltering animals, especially pets, caught in disaster areas. I read a book by their founder, Terri Crisp, several years ago, and was massively impressed with the work she's done, and now they're working in Louisiana. In the panic of disasters, a lot of people leave their pets behind, and then can't get back into evacuated areas to rescue them, or even to try and find the bodies. I'm a horrible sap, so just looking at the page makes me cry, but it's a good organization. They also have disaster preparation information for pet owners, so it's very much worth taking a look at.

And that just makes me angrier than ever.

Date: 2005-09-01 10:38 pm (UTC)Yeah, I know how you feel. We don't have to worry about hurricanes up here, but any time a disaster like that hits, the revelation right after "thank god I don't have to worry about those" is remembering the earthquake we had almost five years ago, and thinking that one of these days we're likely to have another, possibly worse. It definitely spurs you into doing that always-put-off disaster preparation. I'm going to be buying supplies for my cat and I over the next few weeks, to save away someplace safe.
It's a sick, sick situation.

Date: 2005-09-02 05:17 pm (UTC)I got a list of elected representative contacts, if you want to write letters/emails/call our local guys and throw a fit about how stupid it is that we can get aid to SE Asia faster than we can to Louisiana, or demand that they keep FEMA as a separate organization, not just a useless little corner of Homeland fucking Security. 'Cause we can all see now how well that's working out.
