friends of campus cats!
Sep. 1st, 2005 05:02 pmI know I've been posting a lot today, but I just had to point this out.
Some of my local friends may remember that a little over a year ago, I met a pathetic-looking orange stray who lived near my office on campus. Every night as I left work to go home to the old apartment, I'd see him curled up by one of the big air vents - same place, same time, every night. He always ran away if I got too close, but I got in the habit of feeding him whatever scraps and leftovers I had on hand, and talking to him every time I passed. He was a total mess - ratty fur, ears looked like he'd been through a few fights... Naturally, I called him Crookshanks. Sometimes he had a friend or two with him, and once I knew to look, I started to see strays elsewhere on campus, too.
Well, it turns out there's an organization set up just to help these guys. Friends of Campus Cats is dedicated to humanely trapping and neutering the UW's stray/feral population, and fostering and eventually trying to adopt out the cats and kittens who can be socialized. They're also looking for help in a lot of different areas, so if you're at all interested, take a look! I've emailed them, and I'm hoping to drop by their shelter on Ravenna sometime soon, to see how it's going.

Date: 2005-09-02 12:23 am (UTC)I'm going to check into their hours and see if I can stop by on the way home tonight, if they're not closed already. Now that I know about them, I just have to see.

Date: 2005-09-02 04:15 am (UTC)My bosses spoil me rotten and treat me like their own, (they're brother and sister from a big italian family) and my co-workers are intersting. I like to work on my spanish by talking to two of our boys. It's fun to see all the people from around here, like your mom, and most of my other customers are pretty cool. Not to mention all the good stuff there too. Too bad it is a seasonal position. :-(
Rox and Frank aren't too happy that I'm headed back to UW shortly. Am working all bloody weekend though, Fri-Mon, open-close. Was like booo Big Boss, I don't like you this week.... grrrrrr.

Date: 2005-09-02 05:14 pm (UTC)When are you heading back? I know classes start a little early this year, comparatively, so they must be having Dawg Dayz... somewhere around the 25th?

Date: 2005-09-03 05:04 am (UTC)Or they might completely give me the boot because of that. It's hard to tell. I guess it all depends on how generous my boss is feeling that day.
Anyway, it certainly sounds like you'll be busy for the first few weeks - I was a Dawg Daze volunteer a few years ago and they worked me to the fecking bone. It was fun, though. Good luck, and get in touch with me when you're back here!
