"The animal was hairless, except for a strip going down its back, with blue-grey skin, a long, rat-like tail, a serious overbite with large canine teeth, and appeared to be suffering from mange, a chronic skin disease of mammals cause by parasitic mites and characterized by skin lesions and loss of hair."

Is this an excerpt from my oft-repeated gripes about Cuaron's vision of Moony the werewolf, from PoA?

Nope. It's a description from a recent Texan sighting of El Chupacabra. Further proof - Cuaron was totally having some fun at our expense. That was no werewolf. That was a were-goatsucker.

You know, I have this passing idle interest in cryptozoology, and this is bloody hi-larious to me♥ Oh, TEXAS.

"Chupa-thingy. I like it. S'got a riiiiing to it." XD

I've got more than a passing interest in it, but the chupacabra has always struck me as one of those "so you had how many tequilas before it came by?" things.

Damned good name, though. XD

My interest in cryptozoology tends to depend on the animal in question; I totally dig stories about, like, Nessie and the devil-creatures that populate the New England areas, but Bigfoot/Sasquatch and El Chupacabra always kind of ... well, bored me. XD

Ohh, chupathingies. XD

Nessie's fun, and I'm actually a reasonable fan of sasquatch stories even though I mostly think they're bunk. I have to be loyal to the home team, so to speak. ;) But I've always liked the stories about the big cats in England, and the even weirder ones about stuff like pteradactyls in New Guinea or whatever. And giant squid, of course - the one great success of cryptozoology.

Oh, man, giant squid are COOL. I'm not a fan of tentacles (I'm sure you've heard me shriek before XD) by any means, but I find the concept of the giant squid and deepsea beasties absolutely fascinating. XD

Never heard about pteradactyls in New Guinea, however. o_o Where'd you hear those?

I loooooove giant squid. Wish we'd get some footage of those guys while they're still living, some day in our lifetime. All around, the deep sea creatures are the coolest things ever.

I heard about it as a reference in an article on a 'museum' that's trying to discount evolution via claiming that dinosaurs and humans shared the earth. Silly, silly stuff. I'd run across it before, but I can't remember where... Totally crazy - but you have to admit the idea of living pteradactyls is pretty awesome, just as an image.

Wow, art bell territory. I think the chupacabre is the greatest thing to emerge in American mythology. The idea of a giant rodent that sucks goat blood is just, pardon my pun, bloody brilliant.

P.S. coffee.

Is it supposed to be a rodent, really? I'd never noticed that... crazy.

Coffee! Damn it, I'm sorry - I've been working so much my brain is like a sieve lately. When are you free? Weekends are kind of crap for me until the evening, but during the week I've got a bit more time.

Whee, I love El Chupacabra, you just don't hear about "that Mexican goat sucker" often enough. And yes, I totally agree with you on the tequila thing. Nothing would help you to see El Chupacabra faster than a bottle of tequila!

Nothing will help you see anything faster than a bottle of tequila, I'm betting. *g*

It's sad that I thought 'el chupacabra?' before I thought 'POA LUpin?'.

Nah, you're just more used to the legend of the chupa-thingy than I am - I'm aware of it, but I've never really read up on descriptions or sightings or anything. It's one of the ones that's never really grabbed me, interest-wise.

I love El Chupacabra. I wrote a story once, about it, entitled 'Dio De Los Cabra'. Because, you know, it had to be in Spanish. It was a silly story.

Heheheh. I don't even think I knew about it until there was an episode of the X-Files about that mentioned it. I might look into it more, though, now... just for the heck of it.
