Anthropology link of the day - More on Homo Floresiensis, or Of Course The Hobbits Were Cooks.

Sorry, but I don't think that joke's ever going to get old - best common name for a species ever.

Otherwise, not a lot to report except that someone (not hard to guess, since I'm only on close terms with one professor, really) nominated me to be part of the Senior Gift Committee. I think I'm going to do it - much as I bitch, I like the notion of giving something back to the university, and I'm honored as all hell to be suggested for anything like that. Besides, might be fun.

Edit: I wish people wouldn't fuck up mythological references in academic articles. It makes me a tad bit uneasy about everything else they suggest, because... well, if they list Baldur as the German god of war when as near as I can tell he's really the god of joy and innocence, there's just something a little wrong with the way they work.

Wasn't he the Norse god of love and sunlight? That is very odd indeed.

Exactly! He was the god of good and happy things, not war! Stupid people. The article was good (it's about early 20th century Japanese sex education, basically), but after seeing that I had a real hard time taking them totally at their word. Anybody who mixes up Baldur and Tyr... well, how can you trust them?

What does someone in the Senior Gift Commitee do?
(you spelled it with two t's, is that right, I thought it was one t.)
Mixing up the God of War with the God of Joy and Innocence is QUITE a blunder in my mind, the two could hardly be further apart.

It's for planning the graduating class' gift to the university. Beyond that, I guess I'll find out. And I thought it had two Ts.... *Ponders*

Exactly. Silly person.

You're probably right about committee, for some reason yesterday it looked funny with 2 t's and today it looks right.
Have you ever had that happen?
What an honor to be selected to be in that group. Congrats.

All the time. I forget what word it was yesterday, but it was something really obvious and common, and no matter how much I stared at it, it didn't look right.

Thanks!
