Figures that one of the few things I still care about in the Harry Potter universe would turn up still more mysteries. The Black family tree!!! Here's the link, but the pertinent quotes are below.
"There are several familiar names visible, including Callidora who married a Harfang Longbottom. Her sister Charis who married Caspar Crouch. Intriguingly there is a Dorea (1920-1977) who married Charles Potter and had one child, a son. The time frame seems to be consistent with them being James' parents."
He also says there is another listing of a name that is very intriguing to Potter fans "Arcturus Black (1884-1959)." The article goes on to mention these items will be on display Monday, February 20th at 24 Maddox Street London W1 [...]This paper from Jo , along with others, will then be auctioned off the next day."
Conclusions from this:
1. Narcissa is no longer the only known Black with a name not derived from a star or constellation. Belvina? Dorea? Callidora? Elladora? (Incidentally, what was the name of Samantha Stevens' mother in "Bewitched"? I want to say it was close to that...) No more doubt that the family is full of sadists, considering those names...
2. Where the hell are the men of the Black family? I mean... somebody must be carrying on the name, right? But I see no men other than Phineus and Arcturus... WTF? And of course it would appear that the lines leading to Sirius and Regulus, and Bellatrix, Andie, and Narcissa are the ones that are covered. *Growls*
3. Harry is either blind or illiterate. Seriously, how else could he have missed seeing "POTTER" on the tapestry???
4. There are a hell of a lot more burned-out folks than I expected, considering the two we see can't possibly be the ones we know from the books. Huh.

Date: 2006-01-30 12:42 am (UTC)A lot of people have pointed out, this is a donation charity piece and is probably just old notes of JKs that has no bearing whatsoever on the books as they are now. JK hasn't said anything either way, so I'm just sort of biding my time on the whole thing.

Date: 2006-01-30 02:15 am (UTC)Eh, I'm not taking any of it as canon. The ages make no sense - considering that average wizarding life extends well into their hundreds - and as you pointed out, there are hardly any men. I fall into the category of 'it's just JK fucking with her fans again' which is getting really, really old.

Date: 2006-01-30 12:43 am (UTC)The mother of Samantha on the Bewitched show was named Endora I believe.
But you're right, where the hell are all the Black men?

Date: 2006-01-30 01:18 am (UTC)I swear, the new canon is pretty much all that keeps me coming back to it, nowadays. I burned out on the fandom, but I still want to know what happens (mostly to determine how far off my friends and I are/have been on stuff).
