I finally made it out to the contra dancing at Phinney tonight, and despite the fact that it meant me running around like a chicken with my head cut off, dashing from one thing to another all day and then getting whirled around to the point of dizziness all night, I had an absolute blast. I'll totally be going again, hopefully next week.

Anybody who thinks they even might be interested in fun, fast folk-dancing complete with a lesson before-hand and a slow build-up of skills from one dance to the next (and believe me, I'm the two-left-feet sort of person, so if I can do it, anybody can) I totally recommend it. It's an easy jaunt from the university, and the people are very friendly. Plus, it's only $4, and they give you a free admit ticket for your second time (I'm told they only take the first 15 free admits per night or so, but if you show up at 7pm for the workshop I doubt it'd be a problem). How can you beat that?

Such a blast. And unlike the dancing we used to do in the SCA, there was actually a decent number of men to make things work (*gasp*) - in fact, sometimes there were too many!

That sounds incredibly fun, especially if you don't have to know how to do it in advance!

Exactly - I could never have gone if you had to have some skill at dancing beforehand. I did some dance in musical theater in highschool, a little bit of swing and waltz, basic bellydancing, and some very basic medieval dance, but dance is anything but easy for me. The thing with this is that a) everybody's totally cool about newbies messing up, b) everybody wants to help the newbies (yay!), and even if you mess up, you just laugh with your partner and neighbors and move on!

I've heard contra dancing is supposed to be a blast but I've never done it. I gotta try it sometime.

You've totally got to try it. I originally heard about this group on the meetup-webpage for a local Browncoats group, and at the time I thought it was kind of funny that they described it as "living one of the dance bits from an episode." Fannish and odd way of putting it, I thought. But if you like watching the dance scenes in "Safe" or "Our Mrs Reynolds," you'll love this. :D

Awesome! There's also a group in Lake City that meets on Thursdays, apparently - that one's no good for me, but it might work for you guys. Let me know if you decide to go!
