This one's been coming for a while.

So... the plot teaser for Highlander 5 really got me thinking. And not in the way the producers meant, I suspect.

"The world is falling into chaos. As he roams a crumbling city, Duncan MacLeod, the Highlander, remembers happier times before the love of his life left... Hopeless and alone, MacLeod finds his way to a band of immortal companions, including his mysterious friend Methos, and a mortal, Watcher Joe Dawson. Together this small group sets out on a quest to find the origin of the first Immortal and The Source of their immortality."

What does this say to me? "Immortal Road Trip!" It's like Indiscretions... except moreso! And with no plot!

Damn it... I need a Highlander icon, again...

Fandom: Highlander
Title: "As It Should Be"
Characters: Methos, Duncan, Joe, and Richie. Hence, slightly AU. ;)
Disclaimer: Don't own them, bit nervous of what those that do will do with them. No infringement intended.
Warning: Language makes this PG-13 at least. This is short and kind of pointless, but hopefully fun.

“Get your ass in the car, Richie, we’re leaving! There’s a game today, and everybody in Seacouver’s going to be on the freeway if we don’t get out of here in the next ten minutes. I don’t want to start this trip in traffic!”

“I need my i-Pod! I can’t find it!”

“You don’t need it, the jeep has a CD player and radio!”

“Yeah, but you and Joe’re gonna run that! I don’t want to listen to opera the whole way!”

Duncan grabbed the duffel off the floor of Richie’s room, ignoring the younger immortal’s complaints. “We’ll switch off picking the music, just get your coat - we’re leaving. Now.”

“Don’t put that in the back, my gameboy’s in there. What?” Richie snagged the duffle back from Duncan when his mentor turned, leveling an irritated glare at his protege. “I’m stuck in a car with you and the old fogies for god knows how long, I’m not coming without entertainment.”

As the elevator lurched down to the ground floor, Duncan counted to ten and back and took deep breaths. “You could have stayed here,” he pointed out as they stepped out into the dojo.

“Yeah, sure. You’d be all pissed if I didn’t come - ‘it’s a learning experience,’ ‘it’s our history,’ ‘don’t you want to know more about where we came from?’” Richie snorted. “Like finding some damned... something, is gonna change who and what we are, Mac? It’s probably just another stupid cave.”

“We aren’t talking about that.”

“Yeah, what else is new.” Richie tucked his gameboy into the pocket of his sweatshirt and held the door for Duncan as they stepped into the bright light of a surprisingly sunny Seacouver morning. Joe’s jeep was already pulled up to the curb outside the dojo.

“I’m not getting any younger, you two. Get in, or don’t, but I’m not staying here all day,” the watcher shouted, leaning out the driver’s side. “And where the hell’s Methos?”

Shit. Duncan paused in mid-step. This whole trip could go to hell in a handbasket without the oldest immortal... or with the added nightmare of trying to find him. “He’s not with you?”

Joe rolled his eyes. “No, he left a bit ago, said he had to get something. I thought he went up to the loft...”

“Went for coffee. Bloody damned Starbucks.” Methos sidled up to the jeep, clutching a white paper cup as though it was the holy grail. “One on every block of this damned city, but it’s still a fifteen minute wait for a bloody triple-shot.”

Duncan eyed the cup. “That much caffeine can’t be good for you...”

“What’s it going to do?” Methos swung up into the passenger seat before Duncan could register his move and protest. “Kill me?”

Very softly, Duncan thumped his forehead against the side of the jeep. “Let’s just go. Please.”

Richie grinned as he hopped into the front passenger seat. “Just remember, it wasn’t me holding us up this time.”

“Hey, no! Age before swine, Richie. I get the front seat.”

“What, do you need it for your aging back?” Richie snorted. “You weren’t that much older than me when you died. You get no sympathy.”

“Humans aged faster when I was alive. Hard living.”

“Tough luck, I called it first.”

“Richie, for the sake of keeping the peace--”

“You’re always on his side, Mac! Just once--”

“Don’t start with me on this, Richie, I--”

The jeep’s horn blared. All three immortals turned toward Joe, who waited an extra second before removing his elbow just to rub salt in the wound. “Got your attention? Alright. You three are gonna shut the hell up and get in this car, ‘cause I am too damned old to put up with this shit. Richie gets the front until we hit Idaho, then Methos gets it. Mac gets it next. And don’t think I won’t leave your asses on the side of the road if this turns into a problem.”

Varying grumbles of assent came from all three visibly-young men, accented by soft mutterings in a language long dead from Methos.

“Keep it in English, pal.”

“But Akkadian is so much more satisfying.”

“Nobody cares,” Joe assured him with a grim smile. “You three better hope this source of immortality is pretty damn impressive, or I swear...”

“You’ll kill us?” Richie snickered.

Joe smirked, pulling out of the parking lot and pushing past a yellow light barely on the edge of turning red. “Just remember who’s got all the dirt, alright? It only takes a phone call for me to make your immortal lives a living fucking hell for the next couple decades. Don’t think I wouldn’t.”

“It’s true.” Methos crossed his arms, somehow managing to arrange his lanky form so as to take up just enough space the Duncan had to scrunch into the door on his side of the backseat. “He plays dirty.”

“None of you’d be alive if I didn’t.”

“We might still not be at the end of all of this.” Duncan sighed. “This quest...”

“Oh no. No sulking. Turn on the music, Joe - I don’t think I can stand another patented Macleod sulk before I’ve finished my coffee.”

“Alright. Who’s up for Creedence Clearwater Revival?”

Richie groaned. Duncan ignored him, still brooding out the window. Methos just sipped his coffee. If it got too bad, he could always just slip away. He had at least four aliases remaining that Joe hadn’t put a pin on yet... and it’d been a long time since he’d seen Bora Bora in the spring.

Buh? Five?
Did I just mentally delete Highlander Four? I remember three--which was Highlander One but Sean Connery was played by a little asian man.

You know... I'm not the best person to answer this. I've never actually seen the movies. *Slightly embarassed* I basically got wrangled into watching the series, and then avoided the movies veeeeery carefully since then because they have a habit of pretty much raping their own canon.

But Highlander 4 was the one with Duncan (from the TV show). The one... ummm... I'm searching for links here, and IMDB is not being helpful. http://www.imdb.com/find?s=all&q=highlander

...But yeah. They're on 5 now. Somehow. >_>

So did the television show just develop its own canon? I'm assuming it held fairly well to it.

Yeah, the show kind of had its own thing going, to some extent. Still with the swords and the lightning and the "there can be only one" deal, and the Clan Macleod, but there are differences (most of which I can't remember right now...) in how the details worked out. There's even a degree of continuity, in that Connor Macleod from the movies appeared to 'pass the baton' to his kinsman, Duncan, at the beginning of the show.

Personally, I think the series is the part worth watching, and that tends to be the sentiment among folks I know. It's old, it's kinda campy, and it has its moments of total idiocy... but it's also got some fun characters and good times. *g*

Yeah, many of my friends are of similar opinion. It began when I had no television so I never started watching it, so I never got hooked.

*Nods* Yup, I get that. One of my housemates found the DVDs on sale, so that's how I got involved... more or less because I walked past the screen and got a crush on one of the characters.

...Funny, that's how I got into Firefly, too. This is starting to reflect badly on my moral fibre, I think.......

Wow--you have moral fiber? What's it like?

Oh! Well, maybe I do have some after all, then. It could have been my moral fiber that persuaded me to buy that dried fruit because the girl at the counter was cute.

Ah. I remember now - Highlander 4 was called "Endgame" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0144964/) And 5 is being called "The Source."

Thanks!

Poor Joe - he's going to be putting up with those guys (well... minus Richie) til the day he dies, and much as I think he loves them, it just can't be good for his heart. ;)

Heh, that's great. I love Joe playing the parent to the Immortal squabbling kids.

And sadly, much as I love HL, whenever they announce a new movie I don't so much leap in anticipation as I cringe.

ROFL!

I love Joe making them all behave, Richie whining about how they are making him go find the Source because it will be a learning experience, and them trying to get out of Seacouver before the game traffic starts.

I assume that the movie will be terrible, but I look forward to it as an excellent source of fresh material for vidders.

Glad you enjoyed!

I feel like Richie would regard it pretty much as a family trip to... oh, a Civil War site or something like that. Boring educational trip that his family drags him off on. And, hey - isn't that what it is, really? ;)

That assumption seems like it'll be the safest for all of us to walk in with. I'm planning to let my friends-list be guinea pigs for me, and then decide from there whether I'll see it in theaters (unlikely), wait til DVD, or just... pretend it never happened.
