Yay, a new and thrilling piece of junkmail that Hotmail hasn't figured out how to handle.

Last night I got an email that seemed 'off,' but didn't immediately set as junk and delete it 'cause... well, I was fairly tipsy and I didn't want to do anything drastic while in that state. But this morning, when I went to check my inbox, I had a new copy of the same exact email from the same exact address. So, lo and behold, JUNK. Just as I'd originally predicted.

Since they seem to be hitting LJers, I figured I'd post it here for the general good. The address it came from both times was empiresfall06@yahoo.com, with "none" (pointy-brackets instead of quotations, but they turn into html when I try to write them out, of course) in the actual subject heading.

Subject: blog link trade?

Hi there,

I'm a reader. I've recently started a blog of my own, at
empiresfall.blogspot.com, and I wonder if you'd consider adding a link
to me. I'll put up a reciprocal link.

You're doing a great job, by the way. Keep up the good work.

-Steve Barnes

That's a strange one. I don't even get what they're trying to accomplish. If I go to the link, will it install some crazy virus on my computer? Or is it a real blog, and they just want you to promote it for them? I'm confused.

That's exactly what I thought - and I'm not about to try it, either. Most likely it's just some blogger who wants more publicity and figures he can get it by spamming LJ-folks with the hope of reciprocal publicity, but... egh. Not worth the risk of checking.

Anyway, if he/she/it can't be arsed to a) write a more compelling draw-in letter, or b) keep from spamming the same address twice in less than 12 hours, they've got more problems than a lack of publicity.

LOL. You amuse me. ^_^

There's a fairly well-known science-fiction writer named Steven Barnes. The blog looks like an anti-Bush thing, though; I don't think it's connected to the novelist. My guess would be that it's a phishing e-mail, and that if you click on the link in the e-mail you won't end up at the actual http://empiresfall.blogspot.com/ .

Yeah, that's kind of what I suspected it'd be, too. Thanks for looking into it!

it's a real blog. full of photos and videos (which i didn't bother watching) and lefty politics. he has a great photo of bush making a face.

i checked because i don't run windows and figured it wouldn't exploit my system even if it was some kind of fugly site. maybe the dude just has a fucked up email system and it was a legit compliment? but it could easily be comment-type spam, too.

Possibly - the legit compliment thing seems fairly unlikely since... well, you've seen my 'blog.' Best I get is a few folks liking my stories and, more recently, graphics. The email was so vague it struck me as a form letter. But hey, it's possible. *Shrugs*

Thanks for taking a look!
