Typical Seattle Fourth of July - it's been sunny for the last week and a half, but today? Today it's cloudy and grey. I love my contrary city.

Happy Independence Day to everybody who celebrates! I probably won't be doing much in the way of celebrating, although I'm very grateful for the day off - the good local fireworks are all the way at Gasworks park, and it's just too much of a hassle to go all the way down there and back when I have work tomorrow at 8:45am. And since there seems to be nothing going on at our local lake... meh. I'll probably just hang around the house like I did yesterday, with the exception of a few errands.

Here's hoping for peace and freedom for all in the coming year.

yeah, I'm planning a quiet day too, so nice to have it off though. I tried to do some errands a little bit ago, and found that many things are closed. Didn't think of that.
I hope you have better luck than I did.
Happy 4th, and peace and freedom for all would be so nice. Happy thoughts.

Thanks! I'm just going to be looking for macaroni pasta (I've been craving macaroni and cheese, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] nekokoban, so I need to make some for dinner tonight), so that shouldn't be too hard to find. At worst, they probably have it at the 7-11. I think Trader Joe's is open til 5pm, though.

It'd be great. I've been reading a lot about the middle east lately, kind of by random luck, and the whole thing... yeah. Happy thoughts. We'll stick with that.

Mmmm, macaroni and cheese. That really does sound good! Noodles certainly shouldn't be hard to find.

I know! And I haven't had it since that frozen box I got from Whole Foods a while ago. So I'll go out early this afternoon and get some noodles, and make that for dinner.

Sounds like a great day for some writing. (Week days are long, but it's nice not to have homework, huh? :))

Exactly what I'm planning! I'm feeling very accomplished after finishing off one monster of a fic yesterday, so I'm gonna try to keep up the steam!

We are doing our own fireworks off the dock into the canal. Not much excitement, but no hassle ^.^

And yes, it is raining here too (Florida) :/

Just had a thought : A little ironic that the head of reading department at my work would talk about wanting to ban books the day before our Independence day :/

Theoretically, Seattle has ordinances against regular old citizens firing off fireworks in city limits - the houses are often old and too close together, particularly where I live, and there's a lot of trees around. Of course, I heard people firing things off even last night, so I expect that if I just take a little walk tonight at about 10, I'll be able to see a few things.

I don't think it's raining here, yet (although we could probably use it...), but it's definitely grey. Lovely warm grey.

Very. I'm not sure I would've been able to keep my mouth shut about that kind of irony, had it been me in the meeting. ;)

Officially, Seattle got 0.01" of rain early this morning. Not much, but enough to say that it rained on the 4th =D

Well, this is Seattle, of course. I can barely remember a year when it hasn't been grey for the fourth. ;)

Good lord, people have been setting off fireworks every night for the past month. It scares my dog. So I've been noticing it. Every night. For the past month. I'm sure there will be quite a show tonight.

And yeah I really had to work to keep my mouth shut >.<

Eagh. Yeah, I can imagine - my dog when I was a kid was terrified of them, too. I hope my cat doesn't get too upset tonight.

I bet. Silly people!

I'm with you on the not-celebrating thing. Everything's too far away and I need some down-time. :) It's a good day to do errands like you said.

I don't even know if I'll make it as far as the errands, with how I've been doing so far. I kinda like this whole lazy-around-the-house writing-fic thing. ;)

I watched the shuttle launch. To me, this is what America should be doing: peaceful exploration of space, and increasing our scientific understanding of the universe around us for the benefit of humanity.

Damn! I forgot we had one of those today. Not that we get cable, but I'll have to at least check out the NPR report or something... I love the space program. That's what we ought to be doing as a species, for crying out loud.

It was just lovely. You can get video of the launch off the NASA website: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html.

I know a lot of people are all about the whole "what's the space program really doing for us?" question, but it's one of those things that make being human worthwhile for me. We may suck royally at taking care of the planet, we may kill each other for idiotic quarrels about land and ideology and religion, but we've touched the stars, and that makes us, at least for a moment, something special.

Maybe it's just growing up with science fiction on the brain, but there's just nothing better than that thought.

And woo, video! Thanks for the link!

Space exploration is one of the few things I disagree with Jon Stewart about. It always makes me wince when he riffs about the time and money spent at NASA and JPL that could go elsewhere.

Maybe it's the dreamer in me. Maybe, like you, it was too much Star Trek and Star Wars as a child. Whatever the reason, I have always believed that the space program has so much potential to improve our lives. The universe is so big, it makes humanity seem even smaller in comparison, and our wars and bloodshed even more pathetic and pointless.

Day off ... yes ... *nods*.

I'm enjoying the hour and a half of work I had to do yesterday, and the zero hours of work I had to do today, but other than that, I'm not a huge fireworks, flag-waving, BBQ-having kind of person ...

I am planning on bowling and a poker game, though, and what's more American than that, really? :P

Bowling, poker, those are good American pastimes! :D I'm not usually the flag-waving type, either, but I make exceptions since I do like barbeque and fireworks. Any excuse for a party.

Exactly so. I think it'll take a long time even if it does happen, but it's a nice thing to think of, and nothing at all will get better if we don't hope on it.
