Could someone please explain to me why whenever I try to screencap something off a DVD, all I end up with is a black screen? Every single time, no matter what DVD-playing program I'm using, it shows when I paste the cap at first... and then it's black when I try to open it later. WTF?

Obviously, I'm doing something wrong. Now... to be fair, I've been stuck doing the CTL > PrintScreen > CTL V thing. So is that what's going wrong? And if it is, how the heck else do I do it?

In a newer Windows Media Player:

Tools > Options > Performance > Advanced button (at bottom) >

Under "Use video mixing renderer" make sure the "Use overlays" box is UNCHECKED.

Now you should be able to PrintScreen and paste the image into a graphics program without getting the black screen of doom. Some DVDs are pickier than others tho. :/

If you have Windows Media Player Classic you should be able to screencap by pausing the video and going to File > Save Image. I haven't tried this on DVDs specifically tho, so I don't know.

If all else fails, I suggest you d/l a full version of Cyberlink PowerDVD 7 with a keygen or crack included. That's what I used to cap my wrestling DVDs. It lets you save images thru the program.

All of these files are freeware and free to use and d/l, except PowerDVD, which would be pirated.

WinMedia, yeah... and it should be the newest version, I think. Let's see... Ah! Overlays! Now unchecked! YAY!

♥ ♥ ♥ Thank you!!! Okay, I'm off to test this now! Wish me luck!!!

God damn it. No luck. Okay, I'll try PowerDVD as you suggested (got it with my DVD drive, although it's probably an older version).

Man, sorry about that. :/ It'll let you cap normal videos now tho, I promise. Just not DVDs apparently.

And no, older versions of PowerDVD most definitely won't work. They didn't have the option, 'cause my old version wouldn't work so I had to upgrade. But maybe yours is newer than mine was.

I win! I thought maybe my version of PowerDVD would be too old, but it worked!

...And I'll stop spamming you, now. Thank you!!!!

I had the same thing happen last year. I sent a whiny email to my friend who is all expert and such, and she replied "PowerDVD" :)

If it's Windows Media, I feel your pain.

I use Powerpoint DVD for all my screencapping needs, and it works wonderfully. it even has a handy little screencap button to click, to save the whole Print Screen steps.

Yeah, I remember I tried using WinMedia a long time ago and it hated me, but I tried it again the other night since I'm running a new version now... no luck. And last night I tried VLC, with no luck. :P
