There's nothing quite like the first time.

...Looking for fic in a new fandom, that is.

Yes, that was both cheap and lame. But I'm in a funny mood, and for a moment it amused me to get all your hopes up that, praise all the gods and little fishes, maybe Jen had finally gone and gotten laid. Or something.

Anyway, oh, brave new fandom that hath such odd pairings in it... I'm vastly amused. Although there was that brief moment of panic when I found something labeled "Lennier/Vir." Thank god it turned out to be someone meaning it in a friendship way. Mental images are still with me, though. (Gack.) Other odd combinations, however, are strangely appealing. Ivanova I understand, but when did I start finding Delenn attractive?

I would appreciate fic recs from the Babylon 5 fans on my f-list - if it doesn't spoil for season 5, I'm clear for it now! I reserve the right to give you the hairy eyeball if you send me in the direction of anything truly bizarre, but I'm up for whatever. Particular fondness for Ivanova, Delenn, Lennier, Marcus, and G'Kar. No unicorns, please. ♥

...I'm going to go try to write, now. Maybe if I poke at something else for a while, the rabid bunny I've got for the one damned spoiler I swallowed for season 5 will go away. Probably not. But it's worth a try.

Do you want recs for fic not or own, or will self-promotion work? I do have some B5 fic, I'm not entirely certain how good it is, especially since it was some of the first fanfic I wrote, but... *shrug* If you want other people's fic, I could reccomend some of that instead, just let me know. *grin* Oh, and btw, my journal has a link to my fanfic. (Definately don't read Mars Rising or Learning Curve yet though - take place after season 5)

Good luck finding the fic you want.

Do you? Awesome! Self-promotion is just fine by me, I'm just desperate for fics to read! I'll have to take a look (and avoid the ones you mentioned... assuming I stay strong enough to do so - I'm having a hard time with spoiler-avoidance now that it's only one season left).

I so totally understand where you're at right now -- I'm just getting into poking around at some Farscape fic, and I'm always like "They're shipping who? But why?"

It's so bizarre! I mean, some of it is stuff that I kind of like, even if I would never in a thousand years have thought of it, but others... others are just strange pairings. Pairings that make me wonder, "now, how could those two characters ever be construed as a good couple?"

Mostly I just wish there was more well-written fic out there, though. *Wibbles*

Aah, that's the nice part about the Farscape fandom, at least as far as I can tell. There are a handful of excellent writers who produce mass quantities of fic, and everybody else just stays quiet and revels in said fic. :P

A bit intimidating, actually -- I'm attempting my first bit of writing about Farscape, and it's just not going well, and I feel like a lot of that has to do with my expectations of what a Farscape fic can be.

Have I told you that I've come across two Farscape/Firefly crossovers in the last few days? And they both compared/contrasted Zoe and Claudia Black's character in such a fabulously subtle way? Remind me to send you the links when you get all caught up. XD

In fact, one of them has way more to do with Firefly canon than Farscape canon ... I'm going to go read it again to check for spoilers, but I'm pretty sure it's safe. I'll let you know. XD

So far, I've found a few really amazing fics for B5, but it's hard to find them since the fandom is so (relatively) old. And there's a ton and a half of stuff bringing this one character back from the dead. Much as I loved him, I have a hard time conceiving of good ways to pull that off... and he actually died a good, useful death, unlike Some People We Know. ;)

And I'm feeling the intimidation thing, believe me - with all the history behind this fandom, and with everybody else having been in it for so much longer than me, I'm kind of doing the "it's all been done" thing. As well as the "what if I screw something up?" thing. *Headdesk*

Awesome! Anything about Zoe is automatically a good thing, and I like the look of Claudia Black's character quite a bit.

Yeah, the Farscape fandom is fairly old as well ... at least when compared to Firefly and BSG. There's a lot of digging through old archive sites for stories, rather than people posting new things in LJ communities or journals.

"As well as the "what if I screw something up?" thing."

Yep, definitely. I KNOW Firefly canon, dammit, but there's four seasons and a mini when it comes to Farscape, and I've only seen the important ones more than once, and I just feel like I'm going to screw things up somehow. *sighs* The mental anguish involved with writing fic in a new fandom ...

And yes, oh god yes, if you love Zoe, you'll love Aeryn Sun. They are very similar in a lot of ways. *checks fic now*

Lol. I'm looking forward to this, now - although I doubt she can replace Zoe or Ivanova in my affections. She has some pretty tough acts to follow!

This is what makes it a tough act to follow!!

"Who am I? I'm Susan Ivanova, Commander, daughter of Andrei and Sofie Ivanov. I am the right hand of vengeance, and the boot that is gonna kick your sorry ass all the way back to Earth, sweetheart. I'm death incarnate and the last living thing that you're ever going to see. God sent me."

You make a really good point about relative size of the canon - I really do feel like I know Firefly like the back of my hand, whereas the new stuff I'm getting into... hell, I haven't even seen the whole canon yet, and what I've seen of it I've seen only once. Thinking about it that way, I'm not at all surprised that writing for it kind of freaks me out!

As for Aeryn... yeah, I'm getting that, from the fic you linked me to. Lovely fic, beautiful work showing the Firefly characters, and I can already see that I'm going to fall head over heels for Aeryn as soon as I start watching this. I have such a soft spot for the tough warrior women.

Okay, okay ... it's safe. There are a few names you won't understand, but that's about it. It's from Aeryn's POV, and it's fascinating to see an outsider's perspective on the crew and their interactions.

Hey you! *Hugs* I saw your post, but I hadn't had the chance to comment yet - you lucky thing, seeing Stonehenge and the chapel and all! I can't wait to see the rest of your trip report.

I'm glad that first bit amused you - I had a good chuckle after I wrote the first sentence. I just knew that if I left it at that I'd never hear the end of it. ;)

:hugs again for good measure: Stonehenge was one of my favourite things. It rained a bit but otherwise it was AWESOME. And we got there way early, before the busloads of tourists from London, so it was not crowded at all. Got lots of great photos which will be paraded around as soon as I bother.

Awesome! That is definitely top of my list for when I get over to England - that and hunting down Tolkien's grave and lighting some whiskey or pipe tobacco on it, but that's just academic-fangirl whimsey.

Lol. The more you go on about this NO COMMENT thing the more I'm going to want to pry the story out of you, you know... XD

AHAHAHAHA. I may or may not have gone to Tolkein's grave. >>

WELL IT WAS MY BROTHER'S IDEA! And we were in Oxford anyway. It was interesting, quite easy to find as well. Just go to Oxford and buy a two-way bus ticket, it's not too far away from there. There were all sorts of things on it - feathers and rosaries and plants and even a little stuffed lamb. I thought that was sweet.

That's wonderful! Now I'm veryvery happy, and sooo looking forward to getting out there myself - in theory, we're going next spring after one of my friends graduates from UW. I'm so happy that his grave is something of a shrine... even if he'd probably be kind of irked by the thought. Grumpy old professor. ♥

Awesome! I do hope you enjoy yourself! If you have a chance, the 'Mad Max' tour out of Bath is the best way to see Stonehenge, because they get there early like I said, and you also get to go to those other places as well. It was wonderful.

'course not. It's nice because there's a live tour guide, and there are only about 16 people on any given tour, so you can chat and make friends and all.

Also, Wiltshire. We drove all through it and saw haunted forests and chalk horses and manor houses (sorry, the geek in me couldn't help it) and all sorts of things. I adored it passionately.

Oh, that does sound just about perfect. I've always been kinda leery of tours, because it's always a ton of people, and I like just exploring. But if it's only that many, it'd be fun!

Eee. I always feel so ditzy, but I do have a special fondness for Wiltshire for exactly the same reason you mentioned in your post. I mean... come on. Malfoys! And the chalk horses and all sound really nifty, too, of course, and... haunted forests? Doesn't get a lot better than that!

It's quite nice, I liked it. Because I learned a lot about the area from the tour guide. Which is awesome.

The chalk horses thing is that the ground is basically chalk, so if you scrape the grass and topsoil away, underneath it's white. So you can like, DRAW STUFF on the ground. So by tradition people carve giant horses into highly visible hills. Which is awesome. And yes, many ghost stories and old houses and lovely things like that. How could anyone not love it?

Ooo, I love that kind of stuff! There's an underground tour here in Seattle that's supposedly haunted (or at least gives off very weird vibes to people who are sufficiently sensitive)... hmm. Now I kind of want to hunt up other haunted type stuff and go on a little trip around those areas when it gets closer to Halloween. XD

Huh. I just realised how many of my favourite B5 fics have Season 5 spoilers.

Aaanyway, some of the ones that don't:

Transformation, by Deborah Judge (Sinclair)

Motorcycle Proverbs, by Tiamatschild (Lennier) (and come to think of it, [livejournal.com profile] thefiringline has a bunch of great Season 1 ficlets that are worth having a look through)

Skulka, Holod i Granit by not_jenny (Ivanova, and Marcus)

Neutral Ground, by Andraste (Londo and G'Kar)

G'Kar and Delenn both have a lot of stuff happen to them in S5, so it's a pain to find non-spoilery fic for them. There's some great G'Kar stuff on Enemies & Allies, though.

My own fic, most of it angsty Minbari stuff, is over here.

Tell me about it... I keep running into spoilers by accident. Fortunately, most of it remains stuff that I could have guessed, and the rest stuff I don't care about too much. The only thing I'm absolutely not touching is "Day of the Dead" and related spoilers - I already found out too much about what happens to Lennier surrounding that one (stupid me and stupid Wikipedia), and I don't want to know any more until I see it!

Thanks so much! I've already poked through most of yours (excepting the spoilery stuff), but I can't wait to pounce on the rest of these. Especially the Ivanova and Marcus, and anything with Lennier!

Heh, there's a few of us Minbari fans out there! Lots of gorgeous fic, too, but a lot of it's annoyingly set during/after Season 5.
