Last night, we had a huge windstorm. I thought about posting that our lights kept flickering and that I was having a flashback to my childhood, in which power outages were frequent and often long-lasting... but then I thought, "nah, no need for that."

Silly me. Power went out at 10:30 last night. And of course because I told the housemates that it'd probably be back before we got up, it stayed off most of today as well. Obviously it's back now - I'm not sure what time it happened 'cause I spent most of the day on campus, charging my phone in the library and other such important little chores. Because of course my phone chose this morning as a great time to display its new powers of 'go-die-quickly.' Damn thing must need a new battery or something. :/

Anyway, power. Yay. I love power. I love not having to light every candle I own just so we can light our way around the house. And I'm especially fond of things like... you know... the stove. And my teapot. It's the little things in life that make it great.

Let's just hope this doesn't become a frequent thing. The weather around here has been entirely too weird for my tastes, lately.

I had wondered if you got socked by the very special weather in your neck of the country. Here's hoping things calm down and get back to normal RSN.

Oh yeah. We've had every damned thing this winter... early snow, lightning storms, crazy record-breaking rain, and now psycho wind. And to make things really fun, there's a tree trying to snap another power line a block away from us. It was sparking and fizzling in the tree earlier... now they've got it blocked off, and hopefully turned off. *Crosses fingers for no more power-loss*

Oh, can I ever sympathize with wind-induced power loss. Though, with the hurricane season so mellow this year, we really haven't had that many problems at all, though all the weathercritters insist it will go right back to its usual bad self next year.

We had 'em all the time when I was a kid (kind of rural area, loads of trees and all), but this is my first real one since moving to the city. Kind of weird.

It's nice that you guys got a reprieve this year, at least. Hurricanes... bleh, very scary. Every region's got it's own kind of scary, though, I guess.

Oh, definitely. And it's all a matter of what you're used to. I grew up with hurricanes, so that's ... well, not no big thing, exactly, but I don't freak out the way people who've never experienced tropical weather would. A blizzard, now, that would freak my shit out. *g*

Exactly. Here, I live everyday with earthquakes and volcanos sort of hanging over my head. It's just not something I spend a lot of time thinking about. But when I was in Hawaii, a tropical storm came in and I panicked because I realized I didn't have the peninsula and the sound to protect me from the ocean. I kept doing the whole "but we're right on the beach!!!" thing, and freaking out about whether we'd know what to do if the alarms went off.

Thanks! I needed a change, and this one out of the pre-fabs was just what I had in mind.

...Drat. Now you've got me realizing I don't have a nice book icon. That's just wrong! Must go fix immediately!

Wait, this is one of LJ's layouts???? NFW! Which ones is it? I may have to grab it for myself, it's just too cool.

Try [livejournal.com profile] juno_icons for book icons. She's got a lot of cool stuff.

God yes - I suck at layouts, there's no way I could do this on my own! You get to it by putting "Style Contest" for your Layout option, and "Magic Paper" as the theme. There's a bunch of other new ones under the "style contest" option in previews, too.

Some of them might be only paid account options, but a bunch of them are nice.

And I will have to check her out! I'm going to see if I have any book-pics of my own, first, though - I'm kind of on an icon-making spree, so might as well have fun. :D

Found it! It's just too perfect for bibiophiles like us. 8)

Yay icon making! I can't believe I only have one more icon slot next. I keep looking over my icons and thinking, "but, but, I like all of these!"

It is! XD

I had the opposite, kinda - feeling like I hadn't done a great job on some of my older icons, etc. So I'm having fun filling in replacements and getting rid of old stuff.

Power cuts are horrible, we had three really long ones a week or two ago. Had to dig out all the candles and torches, I had a project in for the next day so I was in panic mode, I don't think it would have been possible for me to be more happy when the lights came back on :)

I had a 'silly American' second there where I pictured the flamey-stick kind of torch instead of.. you know... the battery kind, what we call flashlights. No real point to that story, it just amused me enough that I wanted to tell you - I adore little linguistic things like that. ;)

But yeah, we had another teeny one this morning while the power people were fixing some nasty stuff with branches on lines and the like. Fingers crossed that everything stays on, now.
