For only having started really working on graphics for the last year or so, I'm very pleased with myself. Especially seeing as how... that icon took me hours.

I think I'd do better at neutral_zone if I made TOS or TNG icons (I'm not bitter at all, what? :D), but I have no such excuse for ds9_stillness!

Your icons are really pretty, though. And I think they have more of a mass appeal. Mine are too personal and nichey, and I suck at pretty effects like your icon has. :)

Argh. But we all know that DS9 is the best! :D

As for effects... it's all layering textures and colors with different settings, pretty much. I spent a lot of time mimicking tutorials, and now I just sort of... mess around with things until they look right. Hence the taking hours on an icon like the one in the post.

What program do you use? I only use GIMP at the moment, so all the tutorials I've saved are for that as well... but my friend reve_lucide does wonderful things with Photoshop (this icon, for instance), and she has some great tutorials over on her icon journal.

...And that picture of Dukat pretty much fries my brain. That grin! XD On the subject of the color thing... one thing I notice with this one is that the blacks get washed out on the image? If you want to get around that, copying the base, desaturating it and putting it to something like 'soft light' on top of all the other layers might help. It's veeeery pretty as is, though, so I don't know if you'd really want to mess with it!

I use Photoshop. But, yeah, I have trouble keeping my blacks from washing out (though I did it on purpose in that Dukat icon) so I'll keep that tip in mind for future icons. :)
