PotC 3? Rocked so very much. XD

The opening to this movie left me with about the same feeling as the opening to the second - "boy, they're really going for the 'art movie' kind of feeling, aren't they?" But not in a bad way. With possible exception of the fact that the dropping/falling/bouncing piece of eight with its immense weight against a dark background sort of made me wonder where Frodo fit into all of this... But I digress. In any case, the massive group hanging was a decent emotional tag, even if the contemporary political commentary felt a teensy bit heavy-handed there for a minute.

I loved Barbarossa stepping in as Elizabeth's backup in the Singapore scene... and even more loved the fact that she immediately proved she didn't need "protecting." Still my beloved, vicious, completely unpredictable Elizabeth. ♥ And even more so when she unloads all her various weaponry before stepping into Sao Feng's hideout.

Poor Will. He doesn't even survive twenty minutes of this movie before being dunked. Everybody really likes to get that poor boy soaked. ...Not that I blame them, mind.

Jack. Multiple Jacks. All so very... Jack. I adore Johnny Depp in all his brilliant, bizarre glory. And I also adore the rock-crabs, for they were adorable and fabulously scary.

I know. I'm skipping around a lot. But... so much to say!

I loved the 'floating through the night sky' scene purely on the basis of visual splendor, and the souls of the dead... beautifully creepy. Particularly when we finally encountered poor Governor Swann. That poor, poor man. Keira Knightley and Jonathan Pryce both did a beautiful job with their interaction in this scene - very believable and interesting on both their parts.

The Black Pearl bearing down to the shore through dunes of sand was another moment that had my jaw hanging from sheer delight at the spectacle. I admit, I'm a special-effects whore - I love seeing improbable and beautiful things on the big screen, and I don't particularly care about critics who say this kind of thing detracts from the movie. I can think of some movies where it happened, but I genuinely (for the most part) didn't think it happened here. I wouldn't be such an ardent fan of science fiction and fantasy if it didn't mean sometimes seeing things that absolutely, positively couldn't be seen in the real world. And I loved seeing Jack at the top of the mast. The whole reunion scene was well-handled, as well, and I was insanely glad they didn't play out the thing with Will not knowing that Elizabeth killed Jack for too long. That had potential to be way too angsty and irritating, and they avoided it neatly, I thought.

Beckett and his scarred up little buddy pretty much just irritated me for most of the movie. Beckett is creepy, sure, as is his little toady, but... as villains go? Not great. As much as I loved having Barbarossa on 'our' side in this movie, it did sometimes feel like they shot themselves in the foot by converting the best villain the story had. Davy Jones... is interesting, but just fails to be as impressive as Geoffrey Rush in all his delightful, pirate-y glory. Or maybe that's just me being a Geoffrey Rush fangirl. *Shrugs* Either way, I was a little disappointed by good old Davy in this movie - he's been castrated (er... well, also almost literally, but that happened later in the movie!) by the East India Company, and I just didn't like them as adversaries as much as I did the priors.

All the backstabbing and working around each other's backs in the early-mid of the movie got to be kind of irritating, too. Jack is selling out to Beckett! No, wait, Will is! No, wait... oh, whatever. :P

The mix-up regarding Calypso's identity was kind of 'meh,' but it led to a lot of good stuff for Elizabeth, so I was okay with that. I've always said she was a better pirate than either of the boys, and this movie proved it in spades. Her and Barbarossa? Scary-ass-frigging team. I love it. Her as the pirate king? Fecking awesome. If the second movie solidified my love of Elizabeth (a funny thing, since I hadn't been all that fond of her at all in the first movie...), this one built ramparts around it, shored up the walls, and hung tapestries. She's delightfully flawed and brave and tough in all the ways that I love. And so very hot in boys' clothes. Ahem.

Tia Dalma was wonderful, particularly her scene with Davy Jones in the brig. I particularly liked how unapologetic she was about her behavior. Very true for a goddess, and for her character as we've seen it in the past.

The pirate's council was good fun, with lots of amusing little stereotypes. I had a few good laughs there, most of which I don't especially remember anymore. Aside from Claire and Terra's reactions to Mistress Ching, who is apparently the archetype of all Asian mothers, able to strike fear into the hearts of their daughters with a single glance. *g* And of course, Keith Richards was perfect as Jack's daddy.

I don't know how to segue into this, but... poor Norrington. Poor, poor squishy, stupid, noble Norrington. How times change. In the first movie, I felt pretty much indifferent to him, exactly as we were supposed to. By the middle of the second movie... well, I don't know about Elizabeth, but I was ready to push aside Will (who is, in my humble opinion, far too pretty, anyway, but possibly that's because I'm not Keira Knightley nor ever shall be (however much makeup I put on...)) and pounce on him. End of 2nd, I just wanted to save him from himself and his own idiocy. In this one... the poor squishy did manage to redeem himself, at least. He did exactly what he should have done. I just can't stop thinking that I wish he'd done it, and then gotten the hell off the ship and gone back to shore, found a nice farmer's daughter to settle down with and lived a nice, long, contented life far away from the sea.

...Oh, stop it. I can't help being irresistibly drawn to the squishy, stupid fallen-nobleman type.

I've not said much about Jack, here, but I figure that everything's pretty much already been said. He's wonderful, hilarious, and adorable as ever, particularly in the moments when it becomes obvious how much he's grown. The look on his face when he realized that Will was dying... perfect. And again when he made his decision. But still, same old Jack... so much so that the poor guy ends right where he started. Oh, Jack. Never change. ♥

I had a little gripe at the end of the movie, because I felt like the exact way they played things out made it look as though Elizabeth was just sort of going to hang around waiting all the decades that Will spends as the captain of the Dutchman. Which... so totally not her. She's out there being the king of the pirates, for god's sake! And, apparently, having a small child who looks awfully like Will. Which, hey, there are worse things. I just hope he gets plenty of visits from his Uncle Jack and Uncle Barbarossa. Can you imagine how cool it would be for a little kid to have Barbarossa as an uncle? Hell, I want one!

And, of course, the requisite pictures. Costumes are courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] maymargaret (and a lovely job she did on them!), makeup (believe me, there's more of it than it looks like... keep in mind that I'm normally about as pale as humanly possible, and went at least a full shade darker for this, as did Kendra) by me. Loads of fun. Unfortunately, most of the pics of me look either dumb or slightly demented... I really need to take more care with how I'm lit in photographs. We're planning at least one serious photoshoot with this same costumes, set for later in the summer when we can go to the beach and set up some real "shots"... so hopefully more of those will make me look okay. XP

Despite looking like Huck Finn, I really was trying for Elizabeth Swann. Alas.

Fabulous voodoo-lady, our best shot at Tia Dalma.

Elizabeth apparently disdains palmistry...

I'm really not sure why I thought this pose looked good. Again, alas.

Edit Argh! Okay, the layout hates the wide images, so I beg pardon - you'll have to right-click and go to "view image" or something like that in order to see the full images. I'll try to fix that tomorrow, but it's too damned late right now, and I have to get to bed.

No worries at all! I know how miserable chest colds can be, and I certainly empathize with the missing of phone calls. I'm good at that. :P

We'll have to get together some other time really soon, once you feel better! And thank you! XD
