Happy 4th of July to all the other Americans on my list. I'm not especially happy with this country lately, but... it's home, and I still love most of the principles on which it was founded. That's what this is all about, in the end - the principles.

Personally, I think it's fairly clear that the ideals America was founded on, the spirit at the center of the constitution and all that came since, are at risk right now. It's also clear to me, from looking at history, that there's never been a time when freedom wasn't at risk. A good society is an unending process, maybe - a journey, not a goal. Best we can hope for is to push it in the right direction, and keep pushing, keep watching, be tireless in our self-examination and the protection of what matters to us.

...I also think that's entirely too much political commentary for one day, and that I'm going to go write for a bit, and then do yard-work. Tonight, there will be cold fried chicken and iced tea, and possibly fireworks down at Lake Union if I feel up to the hike.
