You know, I try so hard to like RTD... and most of the time I even manage it. But then he says things that make me want to grab his shoulders and shake him.

'If you put two people roughly the same age on screen and make it clear they are not brother and sister, then you are telling a love story.'

Aaaaannd....

...Martha was always going to be second best to Rose. 'That's how we played it, rather than fight it. It would have been an awful moment if the doctor had said, "Oh, you are like a new Rose to me."

Seriously, man. That's just... Oh, for crying out loud. *Wanders off, shaking head*

Also, GIP. For no real reason other than the awesomeness of Ainley!Master.

Yeah, that was pretty much my feeling. "No, you moron, you're supposed to say that the Doctor loves all his companions!"

Why must the production team encourage the idiots?

Yeah. I think the bit about romance pisses me off more, but only because it's so broad.

See, I can almost see what he's getting at with the second quote, except the 'second best' description. Because ARGHHH. Obviously, Martha isn't going to be Rose, so the "you are like a new Rose to me" would be awful (and, horribly, mean that they'd have had to spin Martha into a love story as well, which - arghh.)

What I don't get is why totally dissimilar has to mean second best. dkfjashdfjh.

Exactly. I kind of get what I think he's saying... except then he goes and ruins it. Obviously Martha isn't Rose, and obviously they meant for Martha to feel like she was second best because of that. But... that doesn't mean she should be right in thinking that!

...Seriously, does he have any concept of how terrible that looks?!

See, yes, if he'd said Martha was going to FEEL second-best, I'd be perfectly happy. Because, honestly, I really like her when she's not with the Doctor, and she has a very complete, interesting life at home to go back to. Then when she's with the Doctor, for the majority of the season she's dopey and pathetic, mooning over him and wanting to be Rose.

But saying that she is second best . . .? No. No, that's just bad. Does he not understand the universe, and see that Rose is NOT the be-all and end-all, nor is she the perfect companion that no one can ever follow without fading into her Perfect Shadow?

Apparently not. Which is odd, since I could have sworn that was what he was saying with episodes like, for instance, "School Reunion." And "Girl in the Fireplace."

...Is now a good time to start whining about how much I hope the rumors are true and Steven Moffat takes over the show next? Because he's a good writer. And from what we've seen of him, I like to think that he would be Not-Crazy.

See, that's the trouble with deciding that everything is a love story.
(Also, 790 years is *not* roughly the same as 25.)

I'm trying to pretend to myself that he means "people will interpret anything as a love story," which the fandom bears out. But... but... but... what about relationships that totally aren't about that?

(I wondered if anybody else thought of that... XD)
