Speaking in a purely stereotypical sense, suppose you met a very pretty young woman (mid- to late-twenties) from a wealthy family (ie, wouldn't ever anticipate needing to work for a living)... if someone asked you to guess what she studied at university, what would your guess be?

I know, completely insane. But there's a method to my madness. Sort of.

Suggestions from US- or other-centric friends would not be amiss... I'm just specifically looking for UK-specific expectations. ;)

Also, has anybody here been to Versailles? And perhaps had occasion to notice what kind of security they have there? I promise I'm not considering breaking in... but I've got some characters who might. *g*

The cliche around here (I'm in Scotland) is History of Art - also the degree Prince William went for, entirely coincidentally ;) More generally, though, probably something in the Arts - either History or English?

History of Art sounds like the perfect solution, then. Thank you!!

I went to Versailles back in 2000. The place was swarming with tourists. I don't remember any obvious security apart from a few people standing around, but the tourists were generally herded through a few specific areas on tours and such. Because getting in at all is so easy, were I needing to gain access to a restricted section of the palace I'd probably join a tour and look for an opportunity to slip away - possibly enlisting an accomplice to generate a distraction.

Hmmm.... sounds about like I expected. I wonder how they run security at night... I can get my characters into the building without any trouble, but if there's a night guard who's likely to wander through all the rooms they'll have to... be quick about things. ;)

Thanks for your help!

History of Art. Or possibly the general "Classics"? That's what it used to be, anyway, although I'm not so sure anymore.

Sounds like "History of Art" is the nearly-unanimous answer, so I'm going with it! Thank you!

I find the responses entertaining, since that was my major, and became the household breadwinner. LoL

Yes, but you're special. ....The same answer to why I'm not insulted by "English Lit" as another theory. ;)

I also minored in Classics! Bwa-ha.

But yes, I am a special and unique snowflake. I am, I am! :D

Anthropology is no less useless... it's just that fewer people know it exists and/or what it means. :P

We are! Just like everyone else! XD

Bwa-ha. True enough. When I would job interview, it would usually open with "art history? What's that?" and "Classical Studies? Is that like English Lit?"

*headdesk*

I'd assume arts not sciences, but that may be the female causing me to jump to that conclusion. Also, since you made a point of that she wouldn't have to work I'd guess something not associated with any clear career path, so maybe history or english.

And I probably should've added that the young woman in question is very much not the brightest bulb in the drawer... Looks like I've got a lot of votes for History of Art, so that's what I'm going with. Thanks!

She'd totally fail the part where you have to memorize 300 paintings, who made them, where they came from, and why they're important.

But, I suppose that grades aren't much of an issue in this case ;)

English Lit or History of Art. Or Classics if she's smart (ahaha, not biased AT ALL, NO)

I totally know the feeling... I did English lit for my first few years of college, before adding the just-as-useless but much more interesting anthropology.

And since the character is most definitely not smart, I'm going with History of Art. I know it's tougher than most people give it credit (soooo much memorizing, in the classes I was in), but... honestly? It's the only thing I can picture her studying.

(Okay, I'll admit it... it's Lucy Saxon. *Shifty eyes*)
