You know what I hate the most about spoilers?

The fact that I can never quite keep myself from clicking on them.

Misery loves company, so here's the link to the latest big supposed Doctor Who spoiler.

The only (non-spoilery) things I can think to say about this are: 1) There's still a good possibility this is nothing but a red herring, joke, or tabloid thingy that's being picked up everywhere, and 2) if it's true, I've seen this happen on a gazillion sci-fi shows, and it has never yet been a good idea. There's always a first time, but... I fear.

Warning - spoilerish discussion in comments!

But that last paragraph gives me hope. Really, it does. Because . . .

oh, who knows. All I can do is hope, because you're right, this is never done well on sf shows, and it doesn't fit the doctor.

That doesn't necessarily make it any better. *Points to icon*

I almost didn't click, but then my curiosity got the better of me... and I actually already knew that. It is a fake-out, but I'm hoping that we'll learn something about he actually was a father. Not too much, mind, the mystery's half the fun.

Why do I have this idea that he'd have been Susan's paternal grandfather?

I'd run across it from the Star, but I habitually ignore everything they say. I'm still hoping it's just a rumor, fake-out, something like that, but... bleh. :P

That's funny, that you assumed paternal - I'd always had in my head he must've been her maternal grandfather, for no particular reason at all.

What makes me a bit wary is that she seems awfully blonde, there.

Heh, that is funny. I thought about it for a moment and decided that for some reason I associate the word 'father' with son and the word 'dad' with daughter, even though no such distinction exists.

I find it interesting because in the very first incarnation of the Doctor, he had a granddaughter. Hmm.. Not that i keep up with the new series very well, but still.

That'd be quite a predestination paradox, though, wouldn't it? I mean, presumably the Doctor knew where his granddaughter came from, if he was towing her around the universe with him... and yet now he's Shocked and Appalled (tm) by the idea of this kid? That indicates to me she'll have nothing to do with whatever child of his gave him Susan.

...Of course, writers are weird sometimes....

Well, I agree that it has potential to be disastrous, but I do have hope. Particularly, I have hope that he'll at least spill something about his family in the course of an episode like this--spill something about his real children, cough cough.

If it's even true. Which is doubtful.

I would definitely agree with your doubt, but you also make a good point about potentially getting background about the Doctor's real family out of it. That could be almost worth the potential for horrible plot devices... ;)

I've been hearing about this on and off for weeks and it just... hurts my brain in ways that don't merit examining.

Yes, the Doctor has/had a granddaughter. Ergo, there was procreation at some point. HOWEVER!!! In NewWho Series 2 (someone else can find the episode), the Doctor says "I was a dad once." Which means he had a child WHICH HE KNEW ABOUT! So this whole thing about having a mystery daughter created by aliens--doesn't fly with me.

And if she turns out to somehow be the Ten/Rose Lurve-child, I'm gonna find the biggest, thorniest flower on the planet and ram it down Rusty's throat.

Gah, it hadn't even occurred to me that this might somehow be an idiot's idea of a predestination paradox to bring about Susan. As far as I'm concerned the Doctor had a child (I always catch myself assuming 'daughter'...) in whatever the normal way is for Time Lords, and all of that happened back on Gallifrey long before the First Doctor went off on his big rebellion and stole Susan along with him. ;) If they try to tie this to Susan in any way other than giving us some of that backstory, I'll be intensely annoyed. Like you said, it just wouldn't work.

...Can I join you in that? In fact, while the symbolism of a thorny flower would be appealing, I'd be tempted to say screw that and find a nice big spork instead. :P
