"Andrew Lloyd Webber Night" on American Idol.

I'm soooooo glad I don't watch that show... That sounds like a pretty good definition of Hell, given a) how many of Webber's songs really shouldn't be performed ever, b) how often the remaining decent songs are over-performed, and c) how prone ALL of his songs are to overacting and other aspects of bad performance.

I'm not saying he doesn't have some good songs, I'm just saying... high on the list of things I don't ever want to have to hear is a bunch of wannabe teen pop-stars singing endless renditions of "Memory" and "I Don't Know How to Love Him."

Pretty much, the only Andrew Lloyd Webber show I even like is Jesus CHrist Superstar (i'm still torn over Phantom, but I think it's too overwrought), and I don't even like either of Mary's songs. He is waaaaaaaaay overrated.

I'm a fan of JCSS, but I think the real stars there are Jesus, Judas, and to some degree Pilate and Caiaphas. I know Mary is part of the source story, but as far as the narrative of the show goes, her entire part - songs included - feels tacked on. But hey, it's a musical, it needs a female lead. Sigh.

Gethsemane, though, is a beautiful song. Too bad nobody's likely to sing it.

I am in full agreement with you about the stars of the show. I'm actually in a production of it right now, and my brother is playing Judas, and is totally stealing the show away from Jesus (just because he has a VASTLY superior voice than the man playing Jesus). The thing with mary is that she was there in the Bible with Jesus, but she pretty much washed Jesus' feet, annointed his head with oil and was done with it. XD

Though Tim (Jesus)'s rendition of Gethsemane makes me cry everytime.

I like "Jesus Christ Superstar" pretty well, the music is mostly good and all that, and I even rather like Mary's songs, but... overdone. Soooo overdone. I liked Phantom a lot when I was in high school and early college... now, I'm kind of "meh" on it. Not a bad play, I still like some of the songs okay, but I don't feel any need to listen to them, really.

Stephen Sondheim is soooooo much better than ALW. *grin* If they have to do it, they should use him, of course, that could just make people cry to hear the Idol versions of his songs. *grin*

I've really really liked what I've heard of Sondheim, too - I haven't heard "Into the Woods" in ages, but I remember loving it.

...But they definitely shouldn't let Idol-folks anywhere near it. ;)

Over here, there's a UK show where they're picking the Nancy to star in a new West End production of Oliver, and my parents watch it every night. ALW is a judge, and so every night is ALW night. It's painful. It's so, so painful. And he's awful.

That makes me kind of sad, because I would really kind of love (for certain values of "love) to hear a bunch of American Idol types doing, you know, "Buenos Aires" and "Simon Zealotes" and "Heaven on Their Minds" and "Waltz for Eva and Che". But I know that's not gonna happen.

Yeah, that's the problem with these kinds of things - they're only going to sing the really obvious songs that everyone is sick to death of.

I just caught up on AI last night. You made a good choice. The only two decent songs were JCSS and "One Rock N Roll Too Many". And you were right on about "Memory". But Andrew Lloyd Webber was absolutely painful to watch. All his comments were akin to "Act more!", "Give it soul!", and "Overact!" Arrrrgh!
