In the interest of keeping my brain busy at work, I've picked up a podcast and online radio habit... and I'm running out of good things to listen to. So I apply to you, my lovely f-list - what shall I listen to? I'm particularly interested in educational type podcasts of lectures and such, but I'm willing to try different stuff.

Incidentally... I'm listening to the Natural History podcast off the BBC right now, and... umm... I don't think I've ever heard anyone get so focused on one poor little osprey who's wandering a bit on the way back to her nest. Are osprey endangered in the U.K.? Or am I just running into some kind of bird-watching cultural difference? I don't hang out with bird-watchers much (it's not really a big thing here in Seattle), but I've never heard this much fuss even over endangered eagles in my area. There's a very tabloid sort of feel to the whole thing, it's very strange.

Update: I'm apparently being more blonde than usual - the podcast in question was specifically about migration. Okey-dokey, then. I guess that explains the focus on... migration. :P

It's not academic, but I rather like I Should Be Writing by Mur Lafferty. It's a nice, low-key podcast about someone trying to break into fiction writing. Always makes me feel ready to write when I listen to it... although I'm usually at work at the time. Haha. I went back and downloaded all of them from the beginning and listened to 60-odd over the course of a couple of weeks.

I like Grammar Girl's Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing. (Usually around 5 minutes, covering one point.)

I also like Quirks & Quarks from CBC Radio. It's a long-running Canadian science program currently hosted by Bob MacDonald, featuring interviews with scientists about their recently published work. Generally about 10-20 minutes per segment, with four to six segments per show. (You can choose to subscribe to the whole show podcast or the segmented show podcast.)

I think you should make a list of your current podcasts so that I can 1. copy from you 2. not suggest any doubles. :) My current obsession, one I can't believe I didn't know about till I got here, is Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, the NPR news quiz show.

Awesome, I'll definitely do that! And YAY for Wait Wait Don't Tell Me! That's absolutely my favorite radio show. Soooo awesome.

Right now, I listen to the Skeptic's Guide to the Universe, random stuff off NPR (especially "Wait Wait...", Science Friday on "Talk of the Nation," and "In Character," their recent series about American fictional characters), Friday Night Comedy from BBC1, a feed of history-type documentaries from BBC (called DocArchive), and a science podcast from CBC, which I've only listened to once so far. Oh, and the episode commentaries on Doctor Who, again from the BBC. They're kind of lame so far this season, but... it fills an hour at work. ;)
