Could someone please explain to me why, according to the Seattle PI, it is apparently colder here than it is in Siberia right now.

No, seriously.

Right now, it's 50 degrees F. It's supposed to warm up a bit later this week, but... for crying out loud, it's June!

50 F isn't a bad temperature, per se, but it's not summer weather. And back in May it topped in the 80s!

Awww, that's awful! D: Hope it'll warm up soon!

(The cold is because of a low pressure system just north of Hudson Bay that's dug itself a nice little niche and is pulling air down from the arctic. The same system's causing all the tornadoes and flooding across the states and western/central Canada, because that's what cold lows do. But, uh. That's probably not all that helpful. *geeks out*)

Ahhhhhh, that makes sense! That's so cool that all the weird weather is connected - it makes me feel a lot better, in a "we're all in it together, except in opposite ways" kind of way. Thank you!

(And hey - I'd rather have cold than heat or tornadoes, I guess... I'm too much of a northwest weenie for all that stuff!)

That's the neat thing about weather - it's all connected, though sometimes in some pretty convoluted ways. Oceanographers can bring in discontinuities because, hey, continents in the way, but the atmosphere is totally continuous. Neat stuff! Or, well. I would think so, wouldn't I?

The tornadoes here in Canada are pretty small (capable of blowing over a few fences, that's all) so far this year, which is good. Enough to have people panicking, though! I can understand that. I've never been in a flood or a tornado or anything particularly crazy (apart from that one time with the baseball-sized hail, which was scary).

That's the thing, I guess - I've taken basic oceanography, so I have a concept for that side of things, but it never occurred to me that, hey, the atmosphere doesn't have to bow to all that kind of stuff! In my area, we get all caught up in the difference between the coastal and inland sides of the mountains, so it disguises the fact that it's really all one big uber-system. It really is neat!

The funny thing to me is the things we all get used to, and how much the other stuff freaks us out. I have no trouble with the probability of earthquakes (had a 6 back in high school) even living amid a decent number of volcanos (St Helens and Rainier are both in my general area, plus a few others that are more on the inactive side), but when I traveled to Hawaii a few years ago I nearly panicked when a tropical storm came in and I realized I wasn't tucked away safe in Puget Sound anymore! Weird, the things we get used to.

I would trade my 91F for your 50F, let me tell you.

On second thought, I'll stick with the cold. Sympathies, though, major sympathies. Too much heat sucks.

91F is actually really low for Texas in June as well. It was that hot in February. XD If it were 50F here, I'd probably think the world was ending.

I agree! I've been wondering why we've been having such cool weather right now. It should properly be about 8-10 degrees hotter! But I am not compaining! (Though I probably will once I'm in Seattle because that is cold, cold weather. @_@)

Yeeeeeeah. 50 in June is kind of like "what? no really, what?" I got out all my tank tops and stuff for summer, and then... this. Alas.

But hey - I'd melt if it lived someplace where 90 was cool. So I guess I should be grateful!

Yeah... we haven't really got seasons here. Sometimes we just wish we would. It was sunny and warm for about a week and then boom, back to winter. :(

We get both colder weather in the winter and hotter weather in the summer come in from the Russian-Siberian side than from the Atlantic, which gives us milder climates all around. I think I've been explained once why that is, but I can't for the life of me remember.

My area is usually super temperate thanks to the Pacific ocean and our little protective area created by Puget Sound, but this... bleh. 50 degrees F is not a temperature for mid-June, darn it!

I'm not hating it, but I was really enjoying the sun!

yeah, i'd trade my heat for your cold, really. but it's cheaper to bundle up than cool off, plus the cold makes baking more appealing.

on the other hand, we have some AMAZING strawberries this week, and that's all sun, baby.

Oh, so would I over a lot of heat... I hate too much heat. But... but.... summer!

Oooo, strawberries. That's a very good trade-off for hot weather.
