So... thanks to a friend of [livejournal.com profile] nightsinger's, I have a beautiful new laptop, and in keeping with my usual naming obsession, I feel the need to give it a name. Having toyed with it a bit, I'm reasonably certain I want a female name, but I'm a little stuck on which of several options to pick. So I thought I'd apply to my wonderful f-list for help.

[Poll #1225861]

Also, if any Doctor Who fan passing by this hasn't seen "Ghostlight" (7th Doctor) or "The Time Monster" (3rd Doctor) they should go out right now and rent both. They're fantastic. ♥ "Ghostlight" features a Neanderthal, Ace in a tux, and some really hilariously obvious sexy subtext between Ace and the female guest star of the week, and "The Time Monster" features almost-canon Tardis sex, the Master flirting with Jo to make the Doctor jealous and then seducing the queen of Atlantis in order to usurp her power, and unexpected naked!Benton. It's brilliant.

I voted Romana because I don't get the EVE thing, is it a character, am I being v. slow? And because it would be weird calling a Laptop Ace, because it's weird enough calling a girl Ace, and it does sound a little strange. Oh and I can't think of anthing original, so Romana it is.

Romana III in fact! Yes I like it more now, her conciousness is trapped in your laptop!

Oh and somebody needs to remind me to see those episodes because they sound AWESOME! I've been finding it hard to get back into old who after a little break from it, so these sound good. Ace in a TUX! and TARDIS sex, I so want to try and make your icon hop, but I forgot how to use Imageready.

I was thinking of the little "girl" robot from WALL-E - she's awfully cute, if somewhat trigger-happy.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to whom "Ace" sounds a bit peculiar for a computer. I love the character, but... the name is a bit iffy.

Yikes, that's a disturbing thought. And with her running Vista... good heavens. ;)

Oh god Vista, she'll get into all sorts of trouble with that :O

If you're going to have a kick ass trigger happy computer - which is slightly alarming if you try and picture it, *laptop rises open, secret compartments open up from the sides, guns fold out, the screen reads 'die motherfucker' and it blasts you to death* or something like that. But yeah, I'm sure there are some kickass girls way cooler that a disney/pixar robot!

Yeeeeah.... I've got an XP disc on stand-by, but... Vista is so pretty. I just can't convince myself to give it up without giving it a fair shot!

Well, so far Ace and EVE are neck-and-neck in the poll... we'll see what happens, I guess. Personally, I'm still tempted by Romana, but am starting to suspect that naming a computer for a Time Lord may just be asking for trouble.

And since I seem to have replied to your last comment without noticing the edit, I must add that Ace in a tux is delightful, and that the Tardis sex (while totally subtextual of course... but still pretty "wow, that... has to be what Tardis sex would be like!") is also hilarious. And I will totally try to remember to mess around in Photoshop and see if I can make an animated version of the icon for you. ♥

Ok, I couldn't resist:

I kind of got it working, I just noticed that the hearts are teh wrong colour though, I'll have a fiddle around and see if I can get them back.

I'm waiting for the next OS, isn't it called XP7 or something or am I imagining that? And I'm notgoing anywhere near the latest versions of word and excel etc.

....ohmigod that's adorable. So cute!!! I'm totally stealing that version, if that's okay with you?

The thing is, I'm wondering whether this'll be a case of Windows ME, or a case like it was with XP. ME... was always crap. They never bothered to fix it, because it was just a stop-gap between 95 and XP. But XP, while screwy when it first came out, after a few years turned out to be a great, very stable system. So... I guess it all depends on how much attention they're going to pay Vista before pushing right along to the next. I haven't heard anything about the next one yet, but I'm notoriously bad about following software releases. Particularly since it's happening in my back-yard, so to speak. ;)

and sure go-ahead, as long as you don't mind me using it, i'll credit your art :)
Yeah I'm thinking ME, but who knows?

Awesome! And, while I'm at it, can I snag your "I Want to Believe" icon? Because that is just too lovely.

Yeah... me too, in general. But it is very pretty...

I'm going to stop now, but it had to be done :D

Yep go ahead, I can't remember who made it, it should be credited.

That is so very awesome! I think I still like the text-less one best, but I've saved one of the text ones, too, just in case I change my mind. So fun!

I voted Romana out of loyalty, but I must admit that Ace is an awfully cool name for a computer.

Would you classify Romana as ''insane'' or ''destructive''?;)

Normally insane. But in my head at least, she was definitely both during the Time War... ;)

Ah well. I have a long history of liking (fictional!) women who blow things up.

I don't consider Romana III canon (apparently, Cornell even regrets writing her). I just can't see Romana as a ruthless politican. *fanbrats* Insane, sure, but insane like the Doctor.;)

Psh, I don't mean that version. From what I've heard, the Romana in the Gallifrey audios was... yeah. I still haven't actually heard the audios, but I've heard enough chatter about them to be convinced that she was pretty far out of character.

Still, I like the idea of Romana as the president of Gallifrey, so I've adopted it, and... well, running Gallifrey during the Time War would make anybody a little crazy, I think. ;) Ruthless, though... that I see in Romana even as her cute early-in-2nd-regeneration self. The way I see it, once she gets something into her head, it is going to happen no matter what. But, again, that's purely fanon with a character-interpretation veneer. ;)

Ruthless, sure. I just prefer to think of her as a sort of freedom fighter (like she went off to be E-Space) rather than as a politican.

Although, President Romana does make for hawt Eight/Romana!

I can go either way with her. On the one hand, she's certainly a rebel. On the other hand, I can see her eventually deciding that Gallifrey ought to be a better place and that obviously she herself is the best choice to make that happen.

And of course, the potential for Eight/Romana is a good part of why I favor it, myself... (http://rivendellrose.livejournal.com/551072.html) That, and the "Shada" audio. ;)

I use a convention...

I have a methodology for determining the names of all my systems / hard drives. It is this;

for PC based systems; the names of an female anime character, Fay, Motoko, Nausicaa, etc.

for Apple based systems, names of female characters from PIXAR movies; Colette, Mirage, Dory, BoPeep, you see where this is going. (thought the PIXAR idea was especially clever)

had a friend that named all his systems after witches; Esmeralda, Endora, Samantha...

So, ACE is my vote.
