So... I have my fish. Two medium-sized fancy goldfish, and one large snail. The snail was supposed to just be a way to help me keep the tank clean, but already he’s turning out to be just as entertaining as the fish - he’s biiiig, for one thing, and very pretty despite a very plain shell, and quite adventurous - he’s already trying to climb the glass checking out everything in the tank... oh, and he’s all black. Well, technically brown (his shell) and dark green (because of algae growing on his shell), but his skin is dark-dark grey. But before I put the light on in the tank he looked absolutely black. And Kendra joked we should call him the Master. And the I looked at the other two - a red-and-white, and a brilliantly colored calico with just slightly buggy eyes - and... it just sort of clicked. So... meet the Doctor, Romana, and the Master.

Here’s the Doctor and the Master, eyeballing each other as they were waiting to be introduced to their new home. Romana is in the other side of the same bag as the Doctor, pretending he doesn’t know the big idiot. ;)

Here’s the big happy family.

A close-up shot of the Doctor - aren’t his markings fabulous? And of course the Master and Romana are there in the background.

A close-up of the Master. I know a lot of people don’t think much of snails, but I just love them - look, just to the side of his antenna you can see one of his eyes. He motors along pretty quick, too, and it’s fun to watch him go over things.

And a close-up of Romana. She was actually the first one I picked - I just loved the contrast in her colors. I’m tempted to say she’s the more adventurous of the fish - she seems to like zipping up to the top of the tank and things like that a bit more than the Doctor.
Both fish seem to be quite happy and adventurous (well, as much as one can be in a fishtank with a bunch of plastic plants, a few floating real plants, a pottery “cave,” and a few shells and rocks on top of the gravel. The Master seems to be doing quite well so far, too, although I suspect he’s a little dismayed by how clean the brand-new tank is - no time for algae to grow yet! I’ve told him to just wait, and that I expect this clean start will help us keep up on it. Little luck of that, given the fish have already started messing things up... it really is kind of surprising how much fish poop. Anyway, I’m thrilled, and have already spent far more time than is strictly necessary (or, really, sane) watching all of them and cooing over how pretty they all are.
P.S. - For those who will worry, the tank is high on my dresser, very heavy, and has a nice sturdy top. Theoden watches the bubbles from their filter occasionally (mostly when I’ve been fussing over them and his attention is drawn that direction), but I don’t even think he’s noticed the fish yet. I’m sure he will, but I’m equally convinced that the tank will be just fine. Just in case, he will continue to be locked out of my bedroom when I’m not home, for the safety of fish and electronic equipment both.
P.P.S. - Oh, and no - I really have no earthly clue whether either fish is male or female. The names are pure convenience. I’m pretty sure it’s impossible to tell from external with most breeds of fish, except for spawning changes and, of course, the rare breeds with overt differences, like the swordtails I had growing up.

Date: 2008-09-02 10:31 pm (UTC)I miss having fish, but I'm afraid my cats would eat them. Spooky damn near killed himself trying to get into the aquarium the one brief week I had a pet snake. I shudder to think what he would do for FISH!

Date: 2008-09-02 11:42 pm (UTC)I've never seen a big water snail close up before, these are really good pics. If I had a snail, I'd be constantly poking the glass trying to get it to move to see if it would be as cool as I envision :)
Can you get a Tardis, or a pillar ornament for them to swim around?

Date: 2008-09-02 11:52 pm (UTC)A long time ago, I found a moon snail on the beach on a school trip. Like this one. (http://www.beachwatchers.wsu.edu/ezidweb/animals/images/moonsnail.jpg) They're biiiiig. (Silly Wikipedia only has the Atlantic variety (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_snail), but they're not so different from the Pacific ones from what I can see.) Ever since then, I've kind of been in love with mollusks, especially octopi and sea snails - they're just so awesome.
...Oh, wow. I didn't even think of it, because I saw it before I bought them, but the big chain pet store near me has pillar ornaments. I may have to buy them one. ♥
