halloween plans unplanned

I was looking over my schedule for the next week, and I might have to give up the idea of having the Nuala costume finished in time for Halloween. I've just got too much work to do cutting and sewing the actual costume costume bits, and too little time left to do it in without worrying about screwing something up due to my relative inexperience at sewing.

I can still plan to have the costume in good shape for NorWesCon in the spring, as I originally meant to do, and it probably would be more suitable for that in a lot of ways. But I'm still sad and annoyed at myself for not having been more proactive... I just didn't realize how busy this month was going to be for me. The real bugger of it is that I still feel like I might be able to fit it in... but I just don't know. If I'd been able to get the full day of the 31st off I would be fine, maybe (aside from potential panic re: sewing machine, since I have an amazing ability to cause sewing machines to do strange things, and no ability to coax them to work again after), but... with how busy we've been, I'll be lucky if I can even get off a few hours early that day. :P

All of this would have been so much easier if I'd just been able to find the pieces (skirt and dress/robe) already made. Sewing just makes me nervous. I can make the patterns, that's no problem, but when it comes to the actual sewing, I panic a little bit, especially with nice fabric involved.

Blargh.

My life is crazy until I finish my job apps package (which won't happen before Halloween) but I would definitely be into a sewing meetup in November/December.

That sounds like a glorious idea. We can host, if that's convenient for you, since you've had us over in the past. Hell, we might as well have dinner, too, and call it a girls' night. XD

I'm completely sympathetic with the 'everything got way crazier than I thought it would' gig. I cancelled Episode Nine of the Torchwood game and I'm trying to weasel out of helping somebody move in the hopes that I'll have all the houseguest stuff done before houseguest and the AmberCon stuff done before AmberCon.

Exactly how I've been feeling about trying to get writing stuff, apartment stuff, new bookshelf, work stuff, overtime at work, and the stupid costume all figured out. So... blehhh! I say the universe needs to leave both of us alone for a week or so after Halloween!

Alas, the week after Hallowe'en is AmberCon. But once I clear that, I think work insanity will be about all I have left. I keep wrapping my head in my arms and thinking "Only two weeks. Only two weeks."
However, maybe I can attract the universe's attention after Hallowe'en and you'll be safe. (:
(I'm still looking forward to seeing the costume, and I approve of taking the extra time to get it right. Are you going to the Dr Who party?)

Still going to the Doctor Who party in my old Romana costume, yup. If I just happened to walk into a shop and find the dress for Romana's costume from "City of Death," though, I'd switch in an instant - I've already got the straw boater and red shoes...

Really my life is just an ongoing attempt to pull together as many Romana costumes as possible, it seems. :P

If I'm perfectly honest, I think my dream is to be Romana. Or Lalla Ward, I'd accept that, too. For crying out loud, she was Douglas Adams' date to the premiere of The Empire Strikes Back. That's so many colors of fangirl-dream that I can't even begin to fully express them all! ;)

I would be glad to come over and help with apartment stuff and bookshelf stuff if you'd like. I'm pretty good in kitchens and bathrooms ;D and not so bad with putting things together. Not so great at sewing without patterns though. It's that never took home ec thing.

Everything's actually pretty well set - we put together the bookshelf over two nights this week, and the only bit of cleaning left is the bathroom, which I'll be doing tomorrow.

The trouble with the sewing isn't a pattern - we've got patterns, based on my robe and one of my well-fitted skirts. It's just the time to cut out the fabric and sew it all together without errors that I'm lacking. If I don't get it finished, though, I've got other outfits I can wear for the Halloween party.

There will definitely still be fic eventually! I've been absurdly busy the last few weeks, but it looks likely to slow down for a bit after Halloween. *Crosses fingers*

And there will also definitely be pictures, whenever I finish this dratted costume. Should be spring time when I finally get to wear it, now.

Trust me for Halloween it`s not really worth the extra stress. The dress will get far more appreciation at a con so take your time and don`t rush yourself.

Very true. I was planning to wear it for both, using Halloween as sort of a test-drive, but... meh. At least this way I'll have enough time to make sure it's well-done. ;)

i figure that unless you're going to a fabulous party or something on halloween, it's best to keep it simple. for example, this year my plan is to dress like a slob--i'm sorry, in "comfortable" clothes--and say that i'm dressed up like someone who's about to get ambushed for a maaaaakeover!

last year i wore a pinstripe suit and a cape. it was my "super power suit."

addendum to this: i convinced my coworker to wear her harry potter-style coke bottle glasses and scarf (she went to USC so they're her colors anyway), then get a pair of fairy wings and go as fairy potter. she couldn't find the glasses, but it got the point across in our office.

I usually go a bit overboard for Halloween, just because I love costumes and makeup, and Halloween is pretty much my only outlet for it. But since I'm already planning to go to cons this year... I'll manage. I'll just wear something simple to the party. :D
