In case anyone's missed it, here's the BBC link to the Press Release of Doom.

In the words of Neil Gaiman, 'I trust Steven Moffat's judgment completely.'

That said... wtf?

Despite my afore-mentioned trust of Moffat, I am... dubious. I was really liking the idea of Paterson Joseph... and this guy is only 26, and that's a bit wacky. I disapprove of the idea of him being the same age as me. Also, I disapprove intensely of the fact that he reminds me of Robert Pattinson or whatever his name is - the guy from Twilight. That does not bode well, in my opinion.

That said, I've liked all of the others, so... I guess I'll come to like this guy, too? In time? If he doesn't persist in looking like a Twilight reject? *Sigh*

Dear David Tennant: Are you sure you want to leave? Really? :(

Also, in unsurprising news, DW fandom has made it onto Fandom_Wank for this already.

In a totally unrelated note, [livejournal.com profile] narsilion, you forgot your glasses at my place. I'll keep them until I see you again. :)

Dear David Tennant: Are you sure you want to leave? Really? :(

I'm really feeling that too right now. I thought I was totally okay with it, but now it's hitting me and I'm a bit wibbly about it. Whatever anyone says about his take on the character, he has such massive fanboyish love for the franchise, and I love him for that. Oh, David ♥

You've hit the nail on the head, there. As much as I've come to like Ten, what I really love about him is Tennant and his enthusiasm and love for the show. I'm going to miss him so much! Can we, like, keep him around for episode commentaries or something? Wouldn't that be awesome? ♥

They have successfully set my expectations nice and low. All I really want for Eleven is a haircut.

A very good point, there - if we go in with low expectations, I guess, he's more likely to impress us?

A haircut and ten years of aging would be nice...

I am not a Whovian, but the wank fallout is kind of epic. Although, the boy says that he's the bastard child of Kevin Bacon and Nick Nolte. I can totally see it. >_>

Considering I don't like either of those actors... I'd say that's a fair comparison. :P

Damn, I actually was really hoping for Paterson Joseph too, despite being late to the rumour party (I really, really wanted Chiwetel Ejiofor a long time ago, but I knew even then it was a long shot, haha). In any case, I withhold judgement, but really... he's so... young, haha. I have a hard time seeing what choices they will pick for companion now other than pretty young girl (again). Two young guys would look like a frat party in the TARDIS or something. :( And anyone else would be like... a parental figure. I really want them to shake up the companion role.

Maybe I'm thinking about it to hard.

No, I was thinking the same thing about the companion... it's sad, because this means we're pretty much bound to get stuck with more of the "OMG ROMANCE!!!" between the Doctor and his companion, and while I like that sometimes (hello, Doctor/Romana!), it's not always the way I want it! I like when there's the opportunity to either read their relationship that way if I like, or not. And it would be nice to see older companions again, and guy-companions again, and... oh, hell, just anything other than more and more pretty little blonde girls.

Mostly I suppose I'm just pissed because, hell, I don't like young guys that much, in terms of actors. This guy looks way too young to really be interesting to me, but... I guess we can hope he'll turn out to be an absolutely amazing actor in spite of that? Moffat was impressed, so... we can hope.

If Moffat thinks he can do it, I'm willing to take a chance.

But add me to the chorus of voices who would have liked to see an older actor after all this. I know that regeneration is supposed to leave the Doctor younger, but... but really. I miss grownups on that show. I really, really do.

My last feeling is that if I ever really cared about New Who, in the same way I care about Babylon 5 and House and Who Classic, I stopped after the Ten/Rose stuff and haven't really started up again.

Exactly the sentiment I've been trying to find the words for. I mean, honestly - I understand that the majority of companions have, out of tradtition, been young, but really. The vast majority, I'm pretty sure, have been over the age of 19, and there have always, in the past, been other companions around who are older along with the young ones. I'm thinking of UNIT in particular, but also Barbara and Ian, Harry Sullivan... for goodness' sake, even Sarah Jane and Jo Grant and Teagan were in their early twenties rather than their teens!

I really do still care about New Who, but I empathize strongly with the feeling that the Ten/Rose thing screwed up the dynamic. I may complain about JMS's tendency to force pairings down his audience's throats, but he's got nothing on Russell Davies in that category, IMHO.
