It is apparently news to the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security that you can't stress “dependence on Almighty God as being vital to the security of the commonwealth" in official state business. What, exactly, they thought the First Amendment meant is still a mystery at the time of writing.

'Homeland Security officials have been required for three years to credit “Almighty God” in their official reports and post a plaque with similar language at the state’s Emergency Operations Center in Frankfort.'

Good on the judge for calling them out and informing them that, no, that's unconstitutional. And here's a big shout-out to State Rep. Tom Riner, D-Louisville, a Southern Baptist minister, placed the “Almighty God” language into a homeland security bill - some people really don't deserve public office, and this guy's obviously one of them.

'The decision would have shocked and disappointed Thomas Jefferson,' says someone who obviously hasn't the foggiest fucking notion what Thomas Jefferson thought about a damned fucking thing.

Depends on how you read it. If they're talking about the decision not to allow religious language in government, I think he'd have been all for it! It amazes me that no one understands anymore what a Deist is. I learned it in, I dunno, high school history? It's just not that difficult a concept. The number of founding fathers who actually believed in the divinity of Christ is surprisingly small (there's a reason why Unitarians claim them, even though Unitarianism didn't exist then), but nobody pays attention to that, either. An inconvenient truth, indeed.

I laughed. True, and also very sad. I don't think that these people realize what they are doing for the reputation of their religion. Every time I read something like this, I'm even more glad I don't have a religion anymore.
