Can't win 'em all.

My goodness, that was poor. Not quite as bad as "End of Time," IMHO, but we did rather set a new low with that two-parter, so I'm hoping it'll be a while before that one gets surpassed. First of all, there's Rory, who is frankly so very like both Mickey (before his sudden influx of awesome) and most especially like Sally Sparrows boyfriend whatshisname-with-the-DVD-fixation that I not only get the sense that the writers couldn't be assed to come up with a single new characteristic for him, but I can't be assed to be annoyed, because really? In order to be annoyed, I would first have to give a crap about him, and I simply cannot. He was faintly amusing for a little bit and I will grant him points for not saying "it's bigger on the inside," but really? Really? When did "All Human Men Are Boring Morons" become a major theme of Doctor Who? Oh, right - RTD's era. Never mind, question redacted. Moving on to bigger and more irritating things.

Like how we actually got a pair of black characters... and then they were both killed. After Isabella died, The Boy turned to me and said "I give her dad a 5% chance of surviving the episode." To which I replied "5% is awfully optimistic, don't you think?" Naturally, he was dead soon after, having Bravely Sacrificed Himself to help the Doctor, like all good minority characters ever. Which pissed me off, because frankly I quite liked both Isabella and her dad, inasmuch as we saw them enough to have a concept of their personalities beyond "lovely people, going to die now to save the Doctor and his Companion (and Tin Dog)."

Or! How we had a race of fish people (who looked very much like lobster people to me, but who am I to argue with the Doctor?)... who apparently needed to sink Venice because they couldn't be bothered to just live in the ocean. This planet has an awful lot of ocean, I'm sure a species of sea-people could happily live down there for quite some time (say, until at least the 20th century) without being noticed or disturbed by humanity, and they wouldn't have to do all that stupid complicated crap with perception filters and vampirism and sinking Venice with rain and earthquakes. And if they were so advanced that they could do everything else they could do, why couldn't they clone some women for themselves, or do in vitro fertilization or something? Or, for that matter, how the hell did they lose all their women to begin with? Was that something I missed? Or was it just a coincidence that the only woman who survived the escape from the cracks of doom or whatever just happened to be Mummy Dearest with her ten billion sons? And why was that one son able to be above? Did they just only have two perception filters? I guess that could be reasonable, but... really?

Also, why could they only do the transformation thing at night? Why couldn't they do it all day and actually transform the girls efficiently? Furthermore, how was it that we frequently saw them walking around during the day, but a little UV light was enough to make them hiss and recoil? Oh, and really, the crap with the mirror or crystal or whatever? That so wouldn't work.

And - and I realize this is petty, but honestly - how the hell did the Doctor get into that stag night cake to begin with?

All of that said, I still (inexplicably, in an episode like this!) love Eleven. He's adorable, and I love him very much. This episode, however, was unspeakably lame, and next week had better be much more interesting.

Oh, and one more thing - why did the mouths of the aliens, which clearly had lots and lots of sharp pointy teeth, leave only the classic two pin-pricks? Oh, right - because we were pretending they were vampires. Riiiiight. Silly me.

I just loved the Doctors hissy fit when Rory didn't say it was bigger on the inside, because you know he loves showing off about it.

And is it just me or is Eleven a tiny bit more of a manslag than the other Doctors/ more open about it?

It reminds me of Benton. He was all quiet about the Tardis, too, and the Doctor (Four, I think, possibly Three?) was all "...You're supposed to say it's bigger on the inside," and Benton responds "I thought that was rather obvious, sir."

I hadn't really thought of it, but you could very well be right. Although... more of a manslag than Ten? Or even Eight?

Ah well I havn't seen Eight's performance only heard of it, and I think he is kind of on parallel with Ten, no so much in actions yet more openness of himself as a sexual person. Idk, i think it's possibly because he has less angst than Ten to cloud everything up.

Eight is a lot like Ten in the whole sexuality thing, except more forward (IMHO). Not only does he snog his brand-new companion on their first night out, but he has his own version of Rose in the whole "you are so special and wonderful and MY LOVE" kind of companion, Charley. She's terribly special and important to the timeline and a lot of things like that, and sort of makes me want to strangle her pre-emptively so that we don't get Rose. ...Or her, for that matter.

Also, he had his own "Jamie" type of guy in Fitz (think that was his name?), who seems to be generally considered about 50% canonically in a relationship with the Doctor. In the novels, at least. Fitz is from the novels, Charley from the audios, and Grace (the snogged-companion) is from the actual episode.

Still, he seems up there with Ten in exploring the universe with his mouth and possibly other, more intimate bits. And definitely less angst (at least at the beginning - he seems to accumulate quiet a bit in both the audios and the novels, but I've been catching both out of order and am not sure exactly what happened).
