rivendellrose: (Delenn)

Fallen behind on my episode reviews, as we were on a bit of a binge for a few nights earlier this week. I'll have to try not to get too out of hand with my commentary this time.

Revelations

Known to me as "oh god, it's the one with Sheridan's sister, please let it be over now." Not as bad as I'd remembered, but... couldn't they afford better actors by this point in the series? The rest of the guest-actor pool seems to indicate they could at least part of the time. But no, we get this girl. And the woman who plays Anna, who, for reasons I cannot quite explain, fills me with annoyance by her mere existence on a video screen.

On the other hand, we get G'Kar foreshadowing his future awesome prophetic messiah-y-ness, Londo making fabulously snide remarks about Delenn and G'Kar's absence, Morden being his usual adorably creepy self. And then we get Delenn, fresh out of her chrysalis and... seemingly covered in dried-up bluish clay. Not sure what that's about.

We find out that Clark is dirty much earlier than I'd remembered. Nothing really to say about that, I suppose, it just surprised me. And then there's the bit of "The Second Coming," which... honestly, I've always had a lot of fondness for. I like that poem, weird as it is (although, personally, I think Eliot would have been a much better choice than Yeats). I had a post once where I was making a half-assed attempt to analyze it in terms of the show, but it got a bit random and tangential and I don't even really remember if I ever finished it. Either way, it makes for a nice counterpoint to the scene it overlays.

(I'm working backwards a bit, so I'm not completely sure the line is in this episode, but I believe this is also where Delenn has her fantastic line about how she completed her change with the blessing of her government, which is so not true that it just makes me laugh.)

The Geometry of Shadows

The one with the Drazi! And... really, that's the only thing I found all that memorable about it, and even that plot wasn't as fun as I'd remembered. Alas.

The bit with Vir telling the Technomage that he works for Londo Mollari and thus isn't afraid of things yelling at him and so on is still cute, though.

"But God was there first," says Sheridan in response to some techno-philosophical babbling from the Technomage, "and He didn't need plasma coils or solar collectors." Yaaaaaawn. Had I gotten confused at some point, or wasn't Sheridan explicitly described as an atheist later on in the series?

In whatever case, a largely "meh" episode.

A Distant Star

In which Sheridan's friend has to be rescued by annoying pilot guy, who annoyingly manages to save himself from Noble Sacrifice at the last minute. Pity.

The diet-plan subplot is a lot of fun, though - I particularly enjoyed watching Sheridan, Garibaldi and Ivanova stare dejectedly at their food, twig to the fact that they each had what the other wanted, switch plates... and then panic when mad-with-power Franklin walks by and raises an eyebrow at them, and switch them back hurriedly. Special love for Sheridan shoving spinach in his mouth.

And the other Minbari on the station are already starting to abandon Delenn, the poor thing. I really feel like we never get enough of an idea of how much her exile from her own species affects her - I mean, we get moments, but I find it deeply tragic in a way that the series never really seems to handle.

Her conversation with Sheridan in this episode has a lot of pseudo-philosophical nonsense about wherever you are being where you are supposed to be, which is really just a great way of making sure that no one ever does anything to rock the boat, and therefore makes a lot of sense from the Minbari philosophy. They don't like movers and shakers, they don't like people who are dissatisfied with their lot. And of course there is the teensy irony that Delenn went through a hell of a lot of trouble to make sure that she'd be in exactly that spot that she's pretending to have arrived at so naturally. For all her pretense at willingness and submission and destiny, she certainly is one person who makes her own decisions and makes her own luck.

However, that little rant aside, the same conversation also has one of my favorite-ever pieces of philosophy. Delenn's remarks about us (all of us) being the universe trying to explore and understand itself resonates deeply with me - it's that perfect line between atheism and pantheism that I'm always trying to nail down for myself. I've never felt a need for a god outside the universe, because the universe itself, whole and wonderful and innate, is just so perfect and amazing. ♥

And Delenn is so transparently flirting with Sheridan in this, and he's so transparently transfixed by her, as well. Bubbly and fascinated and so totally clueless.

The Long Dark

Hate this episode. Dwight Schultz not nearly enough to redeem it. Moving on.

And, what the hell? Do we ever figure out what these dudes' connections to the Shadows is, or even see them again, or are we meant to understand simply that they're another of the evil things that the Shadows are calling to them in the land of Mordor, where the shadows lie?

A Spider in the Web

Oh, look - it's my second least-favorite B5 plot-line, the whole Mars thing. And it comes with Bonus Annoying Talia! Who is annoying. And tedious. And always sounds like she's on the verge of tears, at least whenever she's showing any emotion at all other than "cold and faintly bitchy."

Seriously, Garibaldi and Susan like this woman? I hope she's good in bed, because I certainly can't find many other redeeming qualities.

She does have nice hair. But that trait, in a telepath, only reminds me of the horribleness that is to come in S5, and therefore makes me irritable.

Soul Mates

I love Timov. I also love Londo, particularly when he's being happy, and I love his ongoing friendship with Lennier. Unfortunately, I also hate episodes about Talia and the telepaths, and this one is far too close to the other episodes about Talia and the telepaths for my taste.

Redeeming moments: Everything with Delenn and Susan. Even though it makes me cringe mightily every time I see Delenn suddenly unable to figure out hair despite having had improbable and attractive coiffure for the last several episodes since coming out of her chrysalis, I can't help but grin back at her whenever she smiles, and just love her and Susan actually omg getting to talk. Of course they have to talk about hair, because this episode is written by Peter David, and women don't ever talk about anything but hair and cramps don'tchaknow.

A Race Through Dark Places

Abysmal. Hideous. Worthwhile only for a few brief, shining moments of Bester being a horrible person, as he does so very well. And possibly for Franklin, who is running a secret underground for telepaths because he hasn't yet realized how horrible and annoying they are.

Okay, not quite "only," because this episode also has Sheridan and Delenn's first date. Which Sheridan totally does not realize is a date. And, hilariously, neither does my boyfriend. He's still following the red herring (that wouldn't have been a red herring) from Babylon Squared, and is convinced that Delenn and Sinclair are going to end up together. I can't figure out how he's missing the glowing red sign saying "BY THE WAY, I AM FLIRTING" that shows up over Delenn's head whenever she's in the same room as Sheridan, but he has not noticed in the slightest. I am deeply amused. Particularly since just the other day I was thinking "hmm, I suppose of all the characters, Boy is probably most like either Sheridan or Marcus." Well. There you go.

This episode appears to exist entirely to remind me that I hate all episodes that focus on the telepaths. Really. Maybe it's the foresight of knowing that from this arc shall eventually come He Who Really Should Have Died in a Fire Sooner, but... no, I remember disliking their arc from the beginning, honestly. The only thing I can think of that I ever liked about them was Bester, who I still adore in a love-to-hate kind of way. He's just so deliciously creepy.

Anyway. The main plot of the episode was so hideously boring and annoying that I couldn't even properly enjoy Sheridan and Ivanova desperately trying not to pay rent on their quarters. Or, rather, Sheridan forcing Ivanova not to pay rent on her quarters. And that makes me angry, because I love that subplot. I just wish it'd gotten attached to a less asinine main line.

"How many Minbari does it take to screw in a light bulb?" "None. They always surrender right before they finish the job, and they never tell you why. Knock knock." "Who's there?" "Kosh." "Kosh who?" "Gesundheit."

Oh, Sheridan. I want to smack you sometimes, but you are so terribly cute. ♥ Now shut up and let poor Ivanova sleep.

Aaaand then at the end there is the beginning of Susan and Talia's Thing, but I was so frustrated and sick of Talia by the end of this episode that all I could really work up was wanting to shout at the screen for Susan not to waste her time, because in another season Marcus will be showing up, and he's much more fun than annoying, whiny, irritating Talia with her stupid shiny hair. As much as I love this show for actually having a canon female/female romance, I really wish they'd picked someone better for half of it. The half of it that isn't Ivanova, obviously.

The Coming of Shadows

Oh my god, it's a good episode! With no annoying telepaths or horrible acting or boring stupid Mars plots! I'm in love! ♥

Seriously, I'd been starting to worry that I'd misremembered how much I love this show or something. I mean, don't get me wrong, there are good moments in most of the episodes I just got through, but on the whole? A terrible lot. And then this! And it's brilliant!

I love love love love love what we have here for G'Kar - he's so determined to go down the dark road, and then, by sheer chance, he's spared. And he's so very pissed off about it, poor thing - he'd really psyched himself up to kill the emperor, and when he can't it's like he just doesn't know what the hell to do with himself anymore. And then the emperor's message, and for a brief, shining, gorgeous moment we have G'Kar so happy and so effusively friendly toward Londo, and poor Londo is just sitting there looking shell-shocked because, oh, right - he just ordered an unprovoked bloodbath of a bunch of G'Kar's people, which is taking place practically at that very moment. But it's worse than that! Because then G'Kar finds out, and the emperor sees right through Londo and Refa and all their nasty machinations, and it is just so horrible. Londo knows where he's going with this, and he knows it's wrong, but he just can't seem to make himself stop. I don't even think he's enjoying it anymore, he's just... doing it out of habit. Desperately hoping that it'll all turn out well in the end, or maybe he figures he's already too committed to back out. Which, hell, as of this episode, maybe he is. G'Kar would certainly say he is.

I feel like that moment, where he shares a drink with G'Kar while knowing that he's condemned G'Kar's people to death... that's it, that's the turning point. He I don't know what he could have done at that moment, but after that, the downward spiral seems to me to be irreversible in some ways. It's just such a betrayal. And the best part is, we're still going to get that spiral spinning back around on us several more times before they finally end where we see in the vision Londo has in this episode. Oh, boys. ♥ And, while I'm talking about them, major love to both actors for this episode - they're both really carrying the emotional weight of the show, I feel like, and they do an amazing job of it.

And our first glimpse of the Rangers. Just seeing one of them again makes me remember how excited I am to see Marcus again - he really was one of my favorite characters first time through, and I can't wait for him to show up again next season. This guy... meh, no personality. But whatever. We're meant to think he's a baddie for the first good bit of the episode, so that's understandable. And of course there's more Sinclair. Interestingly, The Boy has picked up on the fact (presumably from Babylon Squared) that Sinclair will turn out to be "some kind of messiah figure." "Yes," I thought to myself, "on Minbar... in the past..." I'll be very interested to see what he thinks of what actually happens.

Of all of these episodes, the only one I have anything to say about is "Soul Mates," which I adore for its dialogue and for the Londo storyline. His wives say so much about him, and I actually kinda idolize Timov a little. (PS: my favorite piece of B5 fanfic is about Timov.) But I always skip over the telepath bits.

I like the idea of the B5-universe telepaths, that they have rules they're supposed to follow and are considered something less than human by some and more than human by others (mainly themselves). I certainly liked the treatment better than in, say, Star Trek. It was the execution that, with the exception of Bester, sucked.

(Psst! Fix your formatting!)

Sorry about that! One of these days I'll learn to at least look at entries that I post late at night before I go to bed. :P

Agreed and agreed. There are just so many ways the execution went wrong, that's what boggles me. Bad direction, terrible casting, an abysmal hopping around in the arc. It's hard to remember this is the same guy who, at the same moment, is writing Londo's arc so beautifully. And yes, I hear that's partly the fault of Talia's actress, but... shit, man. If an actress is bad and a pain in the ass to work with, what the hell did you hire her for to begin with?

To replace Lyta's actress, of course. But seriously - there must have been someone better to play Talia somewhere.

I always founds it interesting, though not, perhaps, particularly relevant, that they got the most Aryan-looking actress possible to play Talia.

I always liked Lyta better. Even as a B5 teep, she was less annoying and more interesting than Talia, at least to me.

It is an interesting little angle, particularly considering the "black uniforms and jack-boots" line Garibaldi uses to refer to the Psi Corps at some point early in S2.

I'm fond of Lyta. She's certainly played by a better actress, IMHO, and is a lot less annoying, despite still being a bit whiny from time to time. Plus, I enjoy her moments of total badass. Unfortunately, the whole Byron arc did a lot to undo my affection for her - by the end of that fiasco, I was cheering Bester, and not just in a "if you kill him, I might just forgive you everything else you've done in this show" sort of way. :P

I don't actually remember the plot of "The Long Dark" at all, and the only thing I remember of "Race Through Dark Places" is what's in my icon, both of which strike me as bad signs. Perhaps they will prove better than I (don't) remember?

But awwww, I adore "Geometry of Shadows." I remember liking the Mars plot and the telepath stuff too. I think my least favorite S2 plot is the whole Nightwatch thing. Blah.

Talia is...yeah. There's a reason I made a up a drinking game for her and her whining/fainting/etc. And wow, Andrea Thompson is awful. The only time Talia actually gets interesting is once she turns evil in "Divided Loyalties," although she shows a few signs of not sucking in "Spider," if I remember correctly. I do like that the underground railroad in that episode a.) is run by Franklin (\o/! I love Franklin being righteous), and b.) comes back in S4ish, with the telepath cattle call. (Er...right? It's been a while. I think they reference it as returning a favor or something.)

Mostly I think I'm interested in the telepathy angle because it affects Ivanova. (Oh, gee, what a surprise.) Like you say, the f/f would've been better with someone other than Talia, but I really like the IDEA of Susan falling for a telepath, in sort of a grudging "I want THIS level of intimacy that I knew once before, even though I hate what members of the Corps represent" way, and her having to work through all those layers of issues before she can act on that feeling. And of course she would be more interested in Talia as Talia proves she has a mind of her own--but that might have just been the Control personality talking/acting, telling Susan everything she wanted to hear so that she would get closer. I think that's really Talia's only redeeming feature--she does grow a spine, but there's a strong possibility it's entirely fake.

([livejournal.com profile] mylittleredgirl and I have been discussing the need for a clip-on spine for Talia, and perhaps also a storyline where she gets her personality back and then kicks some Psi Corps ass. I haaaaated Talia my first time through, but Little Red has actually made me able to tolerate her.)

Re: "Soul Mates": Yes, the Londo storyline is wonderful, and I adore Timov. I also kind of love that it's such a blatant ripoff of King Lear, but with wives instead of daughters. :D

I just have a thing against the whole Mars plotline. I'm not even sure what it is, apart from associating it with the whole thing with Lise later on.

I may have to ask you for the format of that Talia drinking game. I'm going to need something to get me through the rest of her episodes. :P

I really like the IDEA of Susan falling for a telepath

Oh yes. It's just Talia (...and Byron, since I'm told that storyline was originally intended for Susan) who's the problem. If they'd been assed to hire a good actress for the part, write better dialogue, and not rush the storyline of her shift in opinion about the Corps, I think I would really have liked that whole story, but... well, that's changing just about everything, isn't it? Still. I find that I love Susan/Talia in fic, just because, hey, all of a sudden the ideas are all there, but we don't have to put up with Andrea Thompson acting. Everything's better without bad acting.

the need for a clip-on spine for Talia, and perhaps also a storyline where she gets her personality back and then kicks some Psi Corps ass.

And maybe that was what was supposed to happen? It's kind of what we get with Lyta, and my understanding is that the stuff that happens with Lyta was the stuff that was originally meant to happen with Talia (...or originally with Lyta all the way through, if you want to go back that far), which would have been a nice way to bring the whole thing full circle. As it was we sort of ended up with two teeps with very similar plots, but only one of them actually develops a personality and spine of her own and kicks ass. And then Byron comes along and ruins everything, and there we get back to that whole 'casting' issue.

It is Lear, and I love that. No harm in stealing from the best plots. ;)

Yeah, the Lise association is no good. Argh, Lise. If only she could've buggered off with Byron sometime before S5.

I may have to ask you for the format of that Talia drinking game.

Voila. :D

Yes, I too heard that Lyta's story with Byron was intended for Susan, and it's pretty much the only thing that makes me glad she didn't come back for S5. Then I REALLY wouldn't have been able to watch.

I'll have to make sure I have a drink in my hand next time we watch one of her episodes. XD

And yeah, the thought of her and Byron was the only thing that made me shut up about wishing she hadn't left. It would have been appalling.
