This computer decided to close Word on me today. While I was just putting the final touch on the first bit of a story I've been trying to put into words for... oh, only a few YEARS!

Anyway. I went back and rewrote the last page or so.

I have no clue what I'm doing with this thing... this is my third or fourth attempt at the story, but I think I'm making progress every time. And that's what matters. I am debating posting a bit of it... Is anybody interested? It's a historical novel, more or less, set in mid-to-late 19th century England and based on the story of Edward Mordake... And so far it's just a few pages.

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] ursule, your drabble really is coming. It's just that I got bit by a very different kind of bunny today, and with as long as this story has been lingering in my mind, I try to pounce on it if it bites me.

Lucky you, 'cause you're stuck seeing it either way - unless I get a manic lightning-bolt of inspiration between then and now, this will be what I submit to Dragon's Pen next quarter. ;)

Actually, I'd be interested in seeing that as well, as it dovetails nicely with an idea I'm working on, and I'd be curious to see how you're approaching the historical novel. My idea is set at some time in the early 16th century, and revolves around an (as yet) unnamed English adventurer in search of Dobrynia Nikitich, the famous Russian knight-errant, and supposedly the slayer of the last true giant in Russia. So it's not really too much like yours, but I think seeing how someone else deals with the conventions of writing historical fiction would really help me.

Mostly I've dealt with it by writing a bit and then running away screaming "ohmigod this is a nightmare I'll never possibly get this thing to work!!!!!" and ignoring it for a few weeks (er... months) while Edward stews in the back of my mind, poking at me every now and then to get back to it.

But I know that's not very helpful. ;)

So I'll go through and edit this chunk somewhat and see what I can do about posting it before the end of the week.

Another thing - if you're still interested in it, that writer's group I was telling you about is having a little workshop for our members sometime next quarter, and we'll be covering various genres within sci-fi/fantasy, including the somewhat fantastic historical novel. The guy who's teaching that section is a fantastic writer, and his Classical Greek novel that he's been putting together is a fabulous example of the genre. If I recall, he's teaching his section specifically on Renaissance Italy.
