Hope all my East Coast friends are doing okay with the earthquake and aftershocks.

5.9 is a pretty respectable earthquake, especially in a region that's not very used to them! Anybody have any good stories from it?

We could feel it here in Pittsburgh, but not too much. I really thought it was due to the guys with the jackhammer outside my building hitting something important. Then my mom texted me to ask if I had felt it.

The local news is full-on freaking out, though. My favorite was from one story that noted that a couple people on the top floors of the high rise buildings had spilled coffee or tea due to the shaking. (Also, I’m glad no one was seriously injured and the damage doesn’t seem that bad.)

Oops. Yeah, I can see how that would be the first thought! And kind of no less scary, when you think of it...

Ah yes, the desperate love of the 24-hr news cycle for anything it can possibly spin into an emergency or crisis. We get that crap every time there's a freaking windstorm around here. "STORM WARNING!!!" ...Honestly, if there isn't firewood flying at my house (which I have had happen before!), it's not a real storm. :P

Glad to hear there's no serious injuries or damage! The last update I'd heard before I went off my lunch break was that there was a bit of damage at the national capitol, but it sounds like all stuff that can be fixed.

I'm at the University of Virginia at the moment, and Charlottesville is pretty close to the epicenter. That said, it wasn't bad at all. I might have a skewed perspective as a Californian born-and-raised, but...

It was pretty hilarious, though. Happened just after the last class of the day, on the FIRST day of classes at the school. I was with my roommate who is from Philly, and another PhD student who is from LA. The two of us weren't even bothered while she was like WHAT IS THIS IS THIS AN EARTHQUAKE I'VE HEARD OF THOSE.

All of this is made even more hilarious by the fact that there was a fire at our apartment complex last night (no one was hurt and there was no damage, just a lot of smoke and fuss), all in the space of 24 hours, making it the most disaster-filled first day of classes I've ever had.

Yeah, I realize now that if the jackhammer guys had actually been shaking the building, I definitely should have left. Oh, hindsight.

All the damage does seem pretty minor (aside from, possibly, some structural damage to buildings at the epicenter) and I haven't seen reports of any serious injuries.

I think the local news here will talk about it for a day and then go back to talking about the flooding, which is really the big story around here. (Pittsburgh had some rather tragic flash flooding last Friday and 4 people drowned).
