Discovery (1x03)
Oct. 1st, 2017 07:33 pmSpoilers and random thoughts under the cut.
- I was right that we'd reconnect with Burnham on a prisoner transport!
-Straight away in the first scene there's a reference to Andorians that I didn't quite catch, and it's driving me up the wall. Unless I find someone else as crazy as I am who noted it down in the next hour or so, I'm going to have to rewatch the first five minutes just to catch it. Something about Andorians being too cold in some places, which, excuse me, was that a sexual innuendo? (And also argle-bargle no, incorrect, my headcanons.) Sayeth one of the prisoners: "I hear that half the prisoners there are scumbag Andorians. Andorians are cold in all the wrong ways."
...Fuck you, too, random prisoner. At least we appear to have remembered that Andorians are miners? (And, okay, also assholes? But lovably so!)
- There are, in fact, TWO references to the Andorians in this episode, which puts them at FOUR for the three episodes we've had so far. For fuck's sake, just show an Andorian, please. This would make me happy for so many reasons both ridiculous and non, and it would also cut down on the "STOP PUTTING GUNS ON THE WALL THAT I KNOW YOU'LL NEVER TAKE DOWN" feeling.
- Boy oh boy that Andorian moon was awfully temperate-looking. I am one of 2 people in the universe who cares about this, but I'm annoyed. And also annoyed because canonically the Andorian homeworld is a moon? Are we... what's going on here?
- Don't worry, I already know I'm unhealthily obsessed.
- So, IMDB is lying about Michelle Yeoh being in all 15 episodes. Not a surprise, because even I couldn't figure out how they'd do flashbacks in all the episodes without it getting obnoxious, but I'm still disappointed.
- Stamets is a grumpy shit and I like him. Also, how does Anthony Rapp not age?! I swear he looks exactly like he did in the RENT movie, and that was a decade ago!
- Tilly is adorable. There is now officially a Captain Tilly in Starfleet's future, in my mind.
- Saru is on his way to slowly forgiving Burnham, and that makes me happy.
- Lorca... is a crazy mofo. And also probably evil. No surprise there -- you don't cast Jason Isaacs to play an uncomplicated cinnamon roll of a guy.
- Landry is clearly In On It (whatever it is) with Lorca. I am unsurprised given that the last time I saw Rekha Sharma she was one of the less sympathetic Cylons in BSG, and yet I am also a tad disappointed because, well, I find her really attractive. Oh well. I still have Burnham. ♥ And who knows, maybe Landry will realize Lorca's nutballs and switch over at some point?
- They're obviously working for Section 31, y/y?
- Enjoyed the chase scene on the Glenn (I am assuming it's named for John Glenn) and Burnham's clever solution to the escape. Glad they called out specifically why she was quoting Alice in Wonderland at the end. Also, I loved the Klingon shushing them. ♥
- Lorca has a Tribble. I didn't have a problem with this, because Lorca has all kinds of shit he's not supposed to, and Tribbles are so famous by now that they're just kind of an expected part of the canon even if they shouldn't show up yet. But then he also had a Gorn skeleton, and I started to be kind of like "Come on, guys, try this thing called continuity. You never know, you might like it." Also, Andoria is an ice moon. Please, try to keep up. That said, whatever, did anyone take a list of the things he has? I'm curious what I missed that's a reference. I thought I saw a Cardassian vole from DS9, but I wasn't totally sure.
- Yes, I am That Fan. Deal with it. I've been in this fandom since I was twelve, I Care About Canon.
- When Lorca did his whole "I'm not who you think I am" thing, I was like "oh, wow, they actually caught me, go them, maybe this isn't what I thought?" Annnnnnd then the end. Nope, I was right after all! Good on you, show, for making me check my assumptions, though.
- The guy who died was definitely Stamets' FRIEND, not his BOYfriend. We have been promised a canonically gay character, Producers, and don't think for a second that I have forgotten or that I'm not watching you to make sure you don't wimp out or kill your gays. (If I find out that that was his boyfriend, there will be shrieking, sohelpmegod.)
- Clearly the Discovery's registry number was chosen before Bryan Fuller left the show. No one else would have used Halloween (1031) as a registry number. Dooooork. ♥
- General thought: I hope we will still have time for standalones and episodes that focus on other characters. I'm thrilled that Burnham is our main character, I love her, and I would follow her anywhere. But I'm also used to Star Trek being an ensemble thing, and I'd love to get to know everybody else a bit, too.
- The opening theme visual sequence and the closing theme music (not sure yet if the music is the same opening and closing?) remind me of Fringe. That makes me happy.
- The Boy informs me that a lot of people are suggesting that Kitty (what? it's as good a name as anything for it, at this point) might be a result of the new transport method being tested by the Glenn, similar to the VOY episode "Threshold." I came in halfway through him watching "Threshold" to find out what this meant. I can't say I'd forgotten how bad that episode was, but dear god do I hope they're not actually referencing it, especially having watched it again. That said, it would explain a few things. In a horrifying way.

Also, I loved the Klingon shushing them.
Too bad for him they didn't listen.

Date: 2017-10-02 04:00 pm (UTC)Section 31 are just the kind of assholes who'd worm their way into more power with each successive shift to the timeline, too. It all makes sense.
Totally too bad for that poor Klingon. He tried!

Date: 2017-10-02 04:27 pm (UTC)It's enough to make you positively love Enterprise, which is also incidentally canon in both the prime universe and the movie universe. (And this universe too, I guess.)

Jerks.

Only a fool fights in a burning house. How was he to know that the Federation was totally slow on the uptake?
