Jun. 3rd, 2004 09:55 amSo apparently there was a big explode-y sound this morning. I totally missed it, but word is it was a bolide - a special kind of meteorite.
From the Seattle PI: Toby Smith, a University of Washington astronomy lecturer who specializes in meteorites, said the skybursts were reported over a wide area around 2:40 a.m.
Allow me to just say that I frigging love going to this school - I've taken a class with that guy!!! He's so cool!!
How cool is Professor Smith? He was lecturing about the asteroid belt one day, and he said we were gonna watch a documentary - normal stuff. "Now, this is an old film," he warns us, "so I want you to know there are going to be some inaccuracies." Lights go down, projector-screen goes blue...
And cuts to Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Leia navigating the asteroid belt.

Date: 2004-06-03 12:47 pm (UTC)Y'know what? I saw that last night. It was spectacular. The whole sky lit up a sort of green yellow. It was *phenomenal*, and I had no idea what the heck had just happened. My first thought was aliens.
