in which i actually enjoy sports
Sep. 19th, 2009 09:12 pmToday, the Boy and I went to a Sounders F.C. (soccer) game, and it was way too much fun. Doesn't hurt that we had great seats and that it was a high-stakes game for both teams, but despite ending in a draw, the game was fabulous, and we both had a really good time. Even talking about getting season tickets next year. And since I've picked up my knitting again and have been rather wanting to do a striped scarf, I'm considering doing one in Sounders colors, just for the heck of it - mostly because I'd feel silly doing one in my university's colors (I was never into sports at my school), and I already have a first-movie style Ravenclaw scarf, made several years ago. I might still give that one another go instead of the Sounders colors... but I'm not sure. I'd switch to Gryffindor for benefit of a) easier recognition and b) better colors, but, alas, they are the colors of my university's rival school, and while I'm not enough into school pride to wear my own schools colors, I'm sure as heck not letting anyone think I'm wearing theirs. :P
I had a point there, but I think I lost it.
Also, have not seen Merlin yet, what with being in the wrong country. Will catch up ASAP, but for the moment am avoiding spoilers!

Date: 2009-09-20 04:50 am (UTC)So, the things I like about soccer above all other team sports are these:
1. Fast action. None of this shit in baseball where you sit around forever waiting, and none of the stupid crap in football where it takes ages for them to run the ball from one end to the other to no effect at all. Also, when a penalty is called, it's dealt with quickly.
2. Even though I don't understand all the intricate details of cards and penalties and all, it doesn't matter. Basic game-play = simple. Team A tries to get the ball into that end, and out of their end, and vice versa for Team B, without touching the ball with their hands. Except for the goalies, who get o use whatever. Easy as pie.
3. The gameplay itself involves a lot of really nifty, impressive tricks. The only nifty thing about baseball that I've ever seen was Ichiro's little move he does before batting (like the bat's a samurai sword - I love it). Football? Nothing. I'm sorry, it's just a bunch of oversized idiots running around a field in a lot of padding, to me. Shit, at least in rugby they're tough guys - no padding!
4. Football: Big ugly bastards wearing too much padding. Soccer: Generally rather hot guys wearing shorts and adorable socks, and doing nifty things like hitting a ball with their chest across the fricking field. I think that about covers it.
...Also, tell her to watch Bend it Like Beckham (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286499/) first. It won't help at all with understanding the game... and she won't care. Neither will you. Keira Knightly, Parminder Nagra and Jonathan Rhys-Myers = hot.

Date: 2009-09-20 11:52 pm (UTC)Anyway...much love for soccer/football. I always feel weird calling it soccer having grown up calling it football. But when in Rome, yeah? I wish it was bigger in the states. I know very few people who are into it here. I can't even brag to anyone about having used to be a whiz at it. :P

Date: 2009-09-21 12:24 am (UTC)If it makes you feel better, I feel weird calling it soccer, too - because most of the media I watch/listen to that refers to it calls it football. Always strange. But yeah... soccer was kind of a big thing at my high school, but only because we sucked majorly at football, whereas our girls' soccer was pretty impressive.
And hell, I'm impressed you were good at it! I sucked, as with anything that involves flying balls. Best I did was get slammed in the face with a ball in high school gym, and break my glasses. :P
