Day 5 - Saddest Event

Well. There are certainly a few contenders for this (like, for instance,
lizbee's very reasonable contention that the finale of Disco S2 is hers -- I considered for a long time just saying "What she said," more or less, and then adding a few gripes of my own that she didn't mention. But I take this question to mean saddest single in-universe event rather than "episode that made me regret ever assuming these writers knew their craft or cared at all about their characters or concept," so since Sisko will clearly come back some day, I'm going to go ahead and say that Georgiou's death is still my saddest event.
I was not prepared. I mean I sort of was -- after all, we knew that there were two captains listed in the cast, Lorca and Georgiou, and the show was titled Discovery, after all, not, like, Star Trek: Shenzhou. But given that I'm not sure Jason Isaacs has ever in the length of his career played a wholly good character and that the majority of his filmography is made up of out-and-out villains, I felt confident that he was a Bad Captain from the minute he was cast. Since Burnham was our first main character who was not a captain, my idea going in was that the storyline would be something like Georgiou sending one of her officers over to investigate a captain who had some seriously hinky stuff in his record, to prove that he was doing something bad. ...I'm not sure why I leaped to this, exactly, but it's what I leaped to as the best explanation for the available information. So I guessed that Georgiou would not be in every episode.
Losing her completely, though, and so damned early... I wanted to cry. I wanted to yell. I wanted to pretend I'd never read the various complaints about Beverly in Hannibal, because holy shit, Fuller, did you have to kill the Asian woman again?
Anyway. I think that's the saddest a single in-universe Star Trek thing has ever made me.

Date: 2019-08-26 06:50 pm (UTC)But Captain Georgiou was someone I would have happily watched seven seasons of, someone I'd been waiting years for, and I know a lot of people who'd also been waiting for that. As much as I understand the story-logic of killing the mentor so that Burnham is cut loose in the world, I wish we could have seen a lot more of her.
