Hey, [livejournal.com profile] zinjadu (and all other Sean Bean and/or Shakespeare fans)...

Take a look at this.

♥ ♥ ♥

Update: Oh, and while I'm linkspamming... I did a little checking at the official Star Trek site (www.startrek.com, as though any of you couldn't have guessed it...) and found this:

In addition to clarifying that he may or may not direct the film, Abrams also distanced himself from Variety's report that the plot of "Star Trek XI" would revolve around a young James T. Kirk and Spock at Starfleet Academy.

"We've made a pact not to discuss any specifics," he said.

At the same time, though, he confessed to being a fan of the Original Series and remarked, "Those characters are so spectacular. I just think that... you know, they could live again."

I'm a bit relieved by this, honestly, mostly because the Starfleet Academy plot idea seemed even further from the usual Trek movie than I'd expect. Still very interested to see what comes of this.

Yeeeahhh.... poor DS9. It was always the black sheep of the whole franchise, honestly. The people who did like it were devoted (*coughs, shifty eyed*), but a lot of people hated it for wandering away from the original ST concept.

...As to how (and possibly why) it was so different... umm... let's just say that I think you'd have a significant sense of deja vu if you watched DS9. I know I got it while watching the first few seasons of B5. Sinclair wasn't my first experience of a station captain who turns out to be a religious figure for an alien race because of some really weird time stuff and aliens who are revered as gods, let's put it that way.

For a good image of why I think Damon would be a good Kirk, rent a movie called Dogma. It's a really funny movie, lots of commentary on religious themes, and Damon plays... an angel called Loki, who's been trapped on earth (specifically Wisconsin) for millenia.

Heh. At least DS9 tried to be different from the rest of ST.
Oh, yeah I remember that JMS took his idea for B5 to Paramount but they turned him down but WB picked it up. Suprise, suprise when DS9 showed up and had the same plotline storywise, apparently JMS had a lawsuit against Paramount. I think they settled out of court, at least this is all I could find out about it on the net.

Oh I've seen Dogma- he was Loki! I remember now, yeah he was good in that. And I remember seeing Good Will Hunting, Saving Private Ryan- so yeah he probably would be a good choice. I just wonder if he can imitate Shatner though? Since I haven't seen the Original ST I would have no idea, what do you think? Or should he imitate Shatner at all? Should he just do his own thing? Hmm...

Yup, that's the story I've heard, too. I always feel kind of weird about repeating it, because I got it second-hand, but... yeah. I'm pretty sure that's what happened. What I heard is that they settled out of court, there was a gag order involved, and the money from the settlement was part of how JMS was able to fund B5 in the end. So it worked out, but... I did feel kind of dirty when I realized just how much my favorite childhood show had stolen. o_O

Well I got it off someone's usenet post a long time ago so yeah second hand. I'm a dirty gossip whore...does that offend you? :D

And I so did not know he used the money to fund B5, oh the irony it burns.

When did DS9 come on the air? It felt like forever and I meant that to come out better than it did. But it seemed to have run longer than TNG at least in my faulty memory.

If I recall correctly it was [livejournal.com profile] miss_arel who told me, and she heard it directly from JMS at a con. So... I'd say it's probably true. I'm a gossip-monger, too, I just get nervous from time to time because every so often these things turn out to be total bunk. I doubt this one is, though.

It ran seven years, just like TNG... and I believe it started in 1992? Early 90s, anyway, same era as B5. They even cross actors a few times - the guy who played Harriman Grey turns up as a recurring and much-loved semi-villain in later seasons of DS9. Slimey, delightfully sanctimonious character... I was so happy to see him in B5.

Wow, miss_arel actually talked to God? :D

Early '90s was a great time period for tv shows. Aww, weenie Grey even though I didn't want to I like him a little bit. You know I'm thinking I might netflix DS9 just to see if I might like it. Is Andrea Thomposon (Talia) ever on DS9? I wondered why she left, and if it was for a better part on DS9...

I'm not sure about that, but she did see him at a con. Not quite the same, but a lot closer than most of us have been. ;)

It was! And you should, although the first season kind of... is iffy sometimes. ...Although once a person survives S1 for B5, that probably sets new levels for 'iffy.' Ugh, Sinclair and Sakai. Anyway. No, she didn't... I double-checked IMDb.com just to make sure, and she wasn't ever on it. My impression had always been that she left B5 because the plot called for her to leave, not the other way 'round - is that not true?

Date: 2006-09-09 07:35 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] miss-arel.livejournal.com
I remember hearing that the plot allowed for her leaving because she wanted to leave the show, not the other way around; she was written out because she wanted to go elsewhere. (I think it probably had to do with her divorcing Peter Doyle.) As I recall, JMS had "backdoors" planned for most of the main characters; ways to write them out of the story if the need should arise. In Talia's case, it did.

No she left-at least from what I've gathered hunting the 'net- because she wanted Talia to have a bigger part and the fact that she was in the credits but not in as many episodes. (I think that means she can contract herself out even if she isn't shooting for B5 right?) Or something like that I know she wanted her role to expand. But again this is just stuff I pulled up on the 'net. I'm sure there's more to the story.

Hee. Too true about S1 on B5. I now have a better tolerance for bad acting because of those two. Makes one wonder if one could sit through a Paris Hilton movie...Yeah, no.

Wow, miss_arel actually talked to God?

XD All right, here's the story.

At WonderCon a few years ago, he came to give a talk (and then later hang around to sign stuff). I hadn't really gotten into Babylon 5 at that point (beyond the first couple seasons) and I mostly knew him through comics he'd written. I can't remember a lot of what he talked about, unfortunately, but what really stood out was that he said that he'd give signed copies of the scripts to "Sleeping in Light" (the B5 series finale) to whoever gave him the best (and the worst) questions. I can't remember what 'worst question' was, but he thought that the question I asked (something about advice for young people who want to get into comic creation) was the best one. The real kicker is that I've had the damned script in my desk drawer for about three years now and I can't read it cos I don't wanna spoil myself!

But you know what really sucks? Long before I met JMS, back when I was, like, 11, I went to a con with my dad where Claudia Christian was a guest star, and I had NO IDEA WHO SHE WAS. GAAAAAAHHHH! *tears hair out*

Bows at your feet. Can I touch you? You are blessed my I touch you? *grabs at you and runs off-taking SiL script with me* :D

Oh man that sucks, I wish I was able to go to some of the cons they sound like so much fun. And I would love to talk to JMS and the cast so many questions so little time...

O_O; HAY GIVE THAT BACK YO!!!! *chases after you*

Cons can be a lot of fun, especially when they're done well. I was lucky enough to, (A) have a big sci-fi/fantasy/comic-book geek for a father and (B) grow up near San Francisco, where Wonder-Con is held.

Well, Shatner in the original Star Trek... let me put it this way. There's a graphic out there on the Interwebs with a picture of original-series!Kirk, sitting there and beaming, and the caption reads, "I'm sorry; I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am." So I imagine Damon could definitely play somewhat over-the-top, overconfident hotshot. Like [livejournal.com profile] rivendellrose said, it wouldn't be that far removed from his character in Dogma. Or some of his personas in The Talented Mr. Ripley

Oooooh, thanks for the link. I'm going Spock hunting. :D

Funny I've never seen the series but I find Spock to be cool? Is that a fandom no-no? Is Spock the mean vicious bitch that everyone knows about but the stupid non-fandom geeks?

:D

Ohgodno. As far as I'm aware, it's more like it is absolutely unheard of in ST fandom for people not to love Spock. He's like... the ultimate in ST love.

...Or maybe that's just me. I totally had a crush on him when I was twelve. Very weird, looking back, but then... I am weird. o_O

Seriously, I love his ears. They are of teh sex.

Aw, how can you not love Spock, in those pics miss_arel sent me the link to, he's not quite a woobie. I think he might be a more hardcore love like Ivanova or Delenn, but he might be a woobie. I'll have to rent the show and find out.

Will Spock lovers hunt you down and flame you to death if someone says they don't like him? Like Cassie Claire's fangirls? Wow the imagery that brings. A bunch of Spock fans with the ears and everything hunting someone down with a water gun with a flame thrower on top of it. XD

Spock is teh shiznit and I think most ST fans would eviscerate anyone who tried to say otherwise. XD He is without a doubt the most iconic and quite possibly the most beloved Star Trek character ever, out of all the different TV series and movies.

I think if there's a mean vicious bitch in the series, some of the fans might say McCoy, but I think he's just grouchy. You would be too, if you had to put up with Captain Sunshine all day and didn't have a Vulcan's patience to help you.

Oooh, good I'm cool then. Also weird I think because I find Nimoy to sexy with those ears...

Aw, Bones is a woobie. Well he looks like a woobie in those pics at least. And I could totally understand that, who wouldn't want to stick a phaser up Captain I-Know-I-Am-Really-That-Good ass? Don't get me wrong Kirk is probably a nice guy but God he looks annoying.
