I didn't LOVE Good Omens s2, but I did very much like parts of it, and the cast was quite good. That said, I have some complaints.

Spoilers under the cut, obviously )

Tried watching the first episode of Marvel's Secret Invasion last night, and... umm... it did not go well.

Spoilers for the first episode of Secret Invasion, obviously, and also for all of Falcon and the Winter Soldier, probably other Marvel properties to date )

So, there's going to be a Dark Crystal TV series, apparently.

My feelings on this are... mixed but largely detached, because I am a very strange geek-child of the 1980s in that while I have extremely strong feelings of love for Labyrinth and a number of other Jim Henson-related properties, I... don't actually like The Dark Crystal. I found it too scary when I was a child (I was a huge weenie when I was little), and when I tried to watch it again as an adult it somehow hit all my embarrassment squick buttons and I had to turn it off. I think it was mostly that the gelf were too twee and that they were puppets. I don't even know. I found the whole thing very uncomfortable and never looked back.

I do, however, have some bets to lay down right here on this timestamped DW entry, based on nothing other than some familiar names on the cast list and the complete lack of creativity on the part of casting directors.

You're all my witnesses to this non-monetary actor-related bet. )

My talking meme calendar has some gaps in it, but I got a bunch of lovely new questions today, and since one of them had to be shuffled a bit due to two people selecting the same days, I moved one to today!

[personal profile] mekare asked: "What other sci-fi films and/or shows have you enjoyed apart from Babylon 5 and Star Trek? Can you rec any?"

And indeed I can! Your mileage may vary, of course, with recommendations, but I'll try to at least give some sense of what it is that I liked about each property, and whether or not I would recommend watching it.

Recommendations and nattering under the cut... )

Just a brief drive-by post to say that I had a nice Thanksgiving, followed immediately by The Boy succumbing to his traditional post-Thanksgiving sickness. This time, fortunately, it did not involve fever, just a nasty cold that left him fairly nonfunctional Friday and Saturday.

He was starting to feel significantly better Saturday night, which, of course, meant that I woke up sick this morning.

Consequently, we've watched a lot of TV this weekend. We're catching up on Community now that we have Hulu (purchased largely for The Good Place, which is still the most compelling half-hour show I've ever seen) and also on the most recent season of Great British Bake-Off, which I was on strike against due to the firing of Mel and Sue (okay, if I'm honest I probably would not have gone so far as a strike just for Mel, but I fucking love Sue Perkins). The discovery that they replaced her with Sandy Toksvig (who I only recognized once she was doing a voice-over bit due to knowing her mostly from the BBC Radio 4 News Quiz years ago) has mollified me significantly, though I don't much like her co-host. Does "Goth" mean something different in the UK than it does in the US, or is he simply delusional when he claims to be one? Eyeliner alone does not a Goth make, dude, and those shirts don't belong anywhere near it. ...Anyway, other than those complaints and the fact that, as usual, they axed one of my favorites well before their time, it's nearly as enjoyable as it used to be. So that's nice.

Also finally watched some Time Team on YouTube (the Westminster Abbey special), in addition to a couple episodes of something called Medieval Dead, which is interesting (if you love forensic anthropology as much as I do, anyway) but could do with being edited down by about half due to excessive repetition.

Not a lot else to report at this time. Sore throat, tired, work getting dumped on me just as I felt too sick to do it, more work expected tomorrow... you know, the usual. Probably going to go to bed early tonight in hopes of kicking this stupid virus to the curb as quickly as possible.

Theo is completely healed up from the surgery to remove his tumor, so now it's time for the other cat, Random, to have an eye infection of some kind. Yay, more vet visits! (Booooo.)

And this time won't be with the cat who turns into a melted marshmallow at the vet, but the one who makes even experienced vet techs and veterinarians think that we picked up an angry feral on the way to the clinic.

In unrelated news, American Gods is predictably (and, occasionally, unpredictably) fantastic, iZombie continues to be delightful, and I got a part time job as the administrator for the editing guild that I've been on the board of for the last few years, which means I can continue my freelance editing career with slightly less guilt and panic about regular income.

Also, I had a very cute but slightly harrowing tour group at the museum today. It turns out that it's very difficult to run a tour for a group that runs the gamut from three late-teens all the way down to what I would guess were second graders. Super nice kids, really lovely, but trying to gear the tour to such a broad group really put me off my game. I'm very glad the tour next week and the two the week after that are supposed to be more traditional single-age groups.

And now, back to the transcription client.

(I am very glad that Mother's Day is going to be over soon. I'm hoping someday it won't be a thing I dread, but... so far, definitely still a dreaded thing.)

Just watched the first episode of The Expanse.

So, friends, tell me: does this get better? Because my was that pilot episode kind of poorly-written and generally uninteresting.
